Closed comedones are often the beginning of inflammatory acne, not the end.

These tiny bumps, also known as non inflamed acne, develop when dead skin cells (keratin) and sebum become trapped inside the hair follicle. As congestion builds and oxygen levels decrease, Cutibacterium acnes can multiply, triggering inflammation. What starts as barely noticeable texture can eventually become painful pimples, pustules, or cystic acne.

It’s also important to understand that acne treatment can sometimes look worse before it looks better. During the early stages of treatment, existing microcomedones that have been developing beneath the surface begin moving through the skin. This can temporarily increase inflamed breakouts before the skin starts clearing. It’s a normal part of the process for many acne clients and one reason consistency is so important.

This transformation took several months with customized acne treatments every 2 weeks, professional extractions, targeted exfoliation, and a personalized home care routine. Acne isn’t cleared in one appointment. It requires consistency, patience, and adjusting treatment as the skin changes.

Now that we’ve significantly reduced active congestion and inflammation, it’s time for the next phase: SkinPen microneedling to stimulate collagen production, remodel acne scars, and improve overall skin texture.
