💪Today is MELANOMA Monday and the start of SKIN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH 📖

- Melanoma is one of the most deadly skin cancers - thankfully it is less common than other forms of skin cancer such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
- Over 70% of melanoma arise on normal looking skin NOT from a pre-existing mole 👀
- Melanoma can be cured when detected and treated at early stages 👏
- Some Risk Factors for melanoma: unprotected and excessive UV exposure and prior tanning bed use, having many moles and fair skin, a family history of melanoma and skin cancer, weakened immune system, genetics

WHAT CAN YOU DO???

✅ Know the ABCDEs of melanoma 👇
✅ Check your skin and your loved ones on a regular basis so you can identify changes.
✅ Practice safe sun practices 🌞 including sun avoidance during peak hours, use of UPF rated sun protective clothing, mineral sunscreen with SPF >30, hats/sunglasses.
✅ Don’t be fooled that you are an exception 🙋🏻‍♀️- any person of any skin type/color, age, and background can develop melanoma.

👉 Topical 5-fluorouracil is a potent chemotherapy agent that helps us target rapidly growing cells.

CHEILITIS or inflammation of the lips = dry, cracked, peeling, itchy, fissured, bleeding, chapped lips

Skin on the lips is very easily affected by the environment including wind, sun, cold and chemical ingredients that act as irritants or allergens.

The lips lack the outer layer the skin on our body has as well as oil glands.

✨Follow these tips to keep your lips in great shape year round:

👄 Don’t pick - the skin on the lips is already thin, removing extra layers allows ingredients to pe*****te deeper and also decreases the lips natural barrier of protection against environmental stressors and infections
👄 Try to avoid licking the lips - saliva contains enzymes that increase irritation of this sensitive skin
👄 Drink lots of 💧- remember the lips need extra hydration as they lack those oil glands!
👄 Go for ointments or balms that help lock in moisture and repair the barrier - ingredients like: white petrolatum, lanolin, glycerin, dimethicone are great. My go to 👉 Vaseline or aquaphor throughout the day.
👄 Stay away from the flavored, fragranced sticks and balms at the checkout - these often have many irritants, preservatives and chemical ingredients. They look fun but can contribute to a vicious cycle.
👄 SPF all day - the sun can cause irritation and burns year round ⛷️ . The lips are not an uncommon location for precancers and skin cancers on the lips can sometimes be higher risk.

✨ 👉 R E T I N O I D S 👈 ✨

Avoid some common mistakes and get the most out of that liquid 🥇

1. Never apply your retinoid to wet/damp skin- wait at least 30 minutes (if possible) after washing. Damp skin allows deeper absorption of the retinoid increasing irritation.

2. Don’t apply too much - this isn’t moisturizer, it’s an active ingredient so a little goes a long way.

3. Dab the pea-sized amount of medication on the outskirts of the face and rub in from out to in. This decreases medication from pooling in more sensitive areas such as around the nose, mouth and folds of skin.

4. After allowing your retinoid time to sink in, apply moisturizer to lock in hydration, create a barrier and decrease irritation.

5. The #1 mistake - starting your retinoid too many nights per week. Start your retinoid at 1 night/week. Gradually increase the number of nights per week slowly over many weeks adding a night every few weeks. This gives your skin time to acclimate while avoiding common side effects such as peeling, itching, redness and burning.
