Medications that disrupt the microbiome.

Yesterday a follower told me that she went to the doctor with severe stomach pain. The doc scolded her for taking probiotic supplements, stating that sometimes they can change the microbiome.

He then proceeded to treat her pain with fentanyl.

First of all, what? Must have been some epic stomach pain to need the strongest and (arguably) most dangerous narcotic of all time.

Second, duh. We all know that we take probiotics to shift the microbiome.

Third, does the doc not know that he just gave a medicine known to disrupt the microbiome?

No. No he doesn’t. Because he is an indoctrinated drug dealer who truly doesn’t know the damages his goods cause.

So allow me to, once again, be the pharmacist that stands in the gap. To bridge the practice of pharmacist and medicine with the ancient wisdom that is plant based therapy.

Here’s a list of just a few medicines known to impact and negatively shift the microbiome:

Any medicine that causes constipation or diarrhea. Opioids, calcium, laxatives, and more.

Any medicine that reduces stomach acid: proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec, Protonix), H2RA (Pepcid, Tagamet, Zantac).

Any medicine that disrupts blood homeostasis: aspirin, ibuprofen,

All antidepressants.

All statins.

All antihistamines.

All oral birth control pills.

All the blood pressure lowering beta blockers, ACE-I, ARBs, and alpha blockers.

Metformin.

And, antibiotics, obviously.

I have a particular beef when docs tell people how wrong their decisions are, and then duplicate the same behaviors without even knowing it.
