Introducing our lipedema biobank. 🔬

At The Roxbury Institute, we are building an in-house biobank dedicated to helping us better understand lipedema. Eligible patients undergoing surgery have the opportunity to participate in research by donating tissue samples, including blood, lipoaspirate fat collected during surgery, and a small punch biopsy.

These samples are stored anonymously and may help researchers uncover more about the causes of lipedema and why the condition affects every patient differently. By collecting and studying a wide range of tissue samples, our goal is to generate the data needed to advance research and move toward more personalized treatments.

The Roxbury Institute Biobank is an important step toward a deeper understanding of lipedema and every contribution has the potential to help shape the future of care.

Compression isn’t one-size-fits-all. 🧦

In this conversation, we discuss compression for Stage 1 and 2 lipedema patients, and why choosing the right level and garment matters.

Lighter compression may be enough to provide support and help manage symptoms. Micro-massage garments can be particularly helpful because their texture gently stimulates the skin and may support lymphatic fluid movement.

Depending on your needs, options can range from knee-high compression socks to full-length garments extending from the waist to the foot, with open- or closed-toe styles based on preference.

💡 One important tip: Compression can be especially helpful during exercise. Increased heat and vasodilation during physical activity can contribute to swelling, so wearing compression while exercising may help manage symptoms.

6️⃣ months later, and this full body transformation is incredible.

This patient with Stage 3 lipedema began her journey under the care of Dr. Karen Herbst, Head of the Diagnostic & Preventative Center, where she was medically optimized before surgery to help set the foundation for the best possible outcome.

She then underwent a two-stage lipedema surgery plan with our lipedema specialist, Dr. Aria to address her thighs, arms, calves, and ankles, and to break apart the fibrosis, remove her diseased fat and prepare the tissue for a brachioplasty performed by our plastic surgeon, Dr. Moshrefi, to further refine her upper arm contour.

Now, just six months after surgery, she’s doing incredibly well. Her results show improved body contour, reduced lipedema tissue, and a smoother, more proportional silhouette.
