FEMA has roundly rejected those charges, stating that the MAGA-launched rumor is “frankly ridiculous and just plain false.”

“This kind of rhetoric is not helpful to people,” Criswell said on Sunday. “It’s really a shame that we’re putting politics ahead of helping people.”

We got another one!

11/05/2021

An open letter to the Honorable Gov. Ron DeSantis:

Dear Gov. DeSantis,

How are you? I am fine.

I know you’re busy battling imaginary election and vaccine demons, but I wanted to draw your attention to something that must have somehow dropped off your priority list:

Daylight Saving Time. The thing that ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, meaning we get another winter of afternoon darkness.

You’re probably wondering why I bring such a mundane thing to your attention when it’s clear you’re busy doing governor stuff.

You may not realize it, but the citizens of this fine state do not want to move away from Daylight Saving Time. There are lots of reasons, but the biggest one is we just don’t like it getting dark an hour earlier. We enjoy the dusk for leisure outdoor activities, not the dawn.

It is so important that in 2018, the Legislature passed a bill opting Florida out of the annual November rite of changing the clocks. The governor at the time, Rick Scott (now a U.S. senator!) signed it into law and we all could not wait for the next November to roll around so we did NOT have to set our clocks back an hour before going to sleep.

Then we find out that, hey, this is only a SUGGESTION. Turns out that Congress, and not the states, decide whether to participate in Standard Time or not.

Frankly, this was shocking to hear. Damn federal government! And those congresspersons won’t budge off the Daylight Saving Time issue, despite a Non Partisan bill brought by numerous reps and senators to do so.

I believe in following processes, so before penning this letter I first took my concern to my congressman, Dan Webster. I sent his office an email Thursday morning, asking what Rep. Webster was doing to protect our Floridian rights of not turning back the clocks.

Here is the reply:

“Congressman Webster supports the Sunshine Protection Act of 2021 which was introduced earlier this year. He also supported a similar version that was first filed last Congress after Florida law was changed to keep the state on daylight savings time all-year. Congressman Frank Pallone and Speaker Pelosi control what bills are heard in the House Energy and Commerce Committee or considered by the House for a full vote – unfortunately, despite bipartisan support for this bill they have not yet scheduled it for a hearing or vote. Rep. Webster will continue to advocate for this bill and hopes it receives a hearing and full consideration in Congress.”

Short version: Blame the Democrats.

Hey, I’m all for partisan bickering on such significant issues as whether it's 2 a.m. or 1 a.m. Sunday. But here’s the thing. This state law was passed when the Republicans were running things in Washington. So while blaming Dems is popular and easy, I’m not sure it’s accurate.

And this, Governor DeSantis, is where you come in. You’ve been pushing the president and Congress around quite a bit lately. Now you have a reason to.

Just who does this Congress think it is that it can tell Floridians when to set their clocks? I don’t care about Ohio or South Dakota or Alabama. The rest of the country can sit in 5 p.m. darkness for all I care.

But here’s something those other states might not know about Florida: It’s WARM here most of the time, even in the winter months. Comparing 5 p.m. in Florida with 5 p.m. in Minnesota, for example, is ridiculous. When it’s 2 degrees it doesn’t matter whether it’s daylight or not.

Plus, it’s not like you’d be riding this trail alone. Arizona and Hawaii are both on year-round Standard Time, which I realize is the opposite of what we want but it shows they were able to OPT OUT of Daylight Saving Time. So why can’t we opt out of Standard Time?

I’m putting this entirely in your court, Governor. Time for some leadership. Don’t leave Citrus County and all of Florida in the dark.
