Chapter 1 goes back to where Hiroshi Kitamura’s story really began.

A Japan rebuilding.
A world getting bigger.
And a young boy quietly watching it all change around him.

Long before he learned to cut hair, Hiroshi was already learning lessons that would follow him for the rest of his life: patience, discipline, attention to detail—and the habit of trying again when something wasn’t right.

He didn’t know where those lessons would take him.

He was simply a boy in Kyoto, beginning to wonder:

What else is out there?

CHAPTER 1 — BEFORE THE DREAM, THERE WAS KYOTO

Hiroshi Kitamura: A Life in Hair

Before Japanese hairstylists became a familiar presence around the world, there was a generation that had no road to follow.

Hiroshi Kitamura was part of that generation.

He left Kyoto for America with limited English, entered the world of Vidal Sassoon, became an Artistic Director, and eventually opened his own salon in Beverly Hills in 1978.

But this isn’t only a story about success.

It’s about rejection, discipline, creativity, independence, bad decisions, rebuilding, and what it takes to stay in this industry for nearly half a century.

Today, Hiroshi is away from the salon, focusing on his recovery. During this time, we began looking back at the road that brought him here.

This is his story — and perhaps, parts of it belong to every hairdresser trying to build their own path.
