As we move into “cooties” season - There’s something I wish more people understood about service providers:

There is a LOT of fear that comes with cancelling an appointment because we’re sick—or even because we might be getting sick.

We don’t take cancelling lightly.

When you’re self-employed, there usually isn’t paid sick leave. There isn’t a PTO bank. There isn’t someone covering your shift and making sure your paycheck stays the same.

If I cancel a full day of appointments because I’m sick, that can mean hundreds of dollars in lost income in a single day.

And honestly? Sometimes we push ourselves to work when we probably shouldn’t because we’re thinking about the bills, our families, our businesses, and the clients who have been waiting for their appointment.

But here’s the thing:

You deserve a healthy provider. And your provider deserves the ability to stay home when they’re sick without feeling like they’re financially putting their business in danger.

And this goes both ways. 🤍

If you’re feeling under the weather, have a fever, a stomach bug, a significant cough, pink eye, or you’re just starting to feel like “Uh oh… I might be coming down with something,” please reach out and reschedule your appointment.

I know cancelling an appointment can be frustrating. I know you may have been looking forward to your massage all week. And I know life is busy.

But please remember that your massage therapist is in close, prolonged contact with you. If you come in sick, there’s a very real possibility that I could become sick too—and then I may have to cancel several more appointments, lose even more income, and potentially expose other clients.

Please don’t feel guilty about rescheduling when you’re sick.

I would much rather have you send me a message saying, “I’m not feeling well, can we reschedule?” than have you feel like you have to show up because you’re afraid of disappointing me.

And when I’m the one who is sick, I hope you’ll give me that same grace.

We’re both human. We both get sick. And neither of us benefits from passing it along.

Your health matters. My health matters. And protecting each other is worth more than one appointment. 🌻

Things I’ve heard recently at work, doing what I do:

“I’m going through a divorce.”

“I’m cutting back on w**e and making some changes.”

“I’ve been making new friends through volunteering.”

“I had to put my dog down.”

“My children are beautiful.”

“As a single mom, it’s so hard to find time for myself.”

“I want to travel more.”

“We just moved here and we’re starting a new life.”

“I was betrayed by someone I trusted—someone I had even tried to mentor.”

These are just little pieces of the lives people bring into my treatment room.

And one of my favorite parts of having clients I see regularly is that it feels like picking up a book I love and getting to read a new chapter every time.

I look forward to hearing the updates. The good ones, the hard ones, the unexpected ones. I remember where they were the last time I saw them, and I get to hear what happened next.

Because people don’t just come to me with tight shoulders and sore backs.

They come with new beginnings, heartbreak, grief, excitement, motherhood, dreams, loss, growth and everything in between.

Sometimes they need therapeutic work.

Sometimes they need 90 minutes where nobody needs anything from them.

And sometimes they just need someone to listen.

I feel incredibly grateful that I get to care for people in this way—and that, over time, I get to know the stories behind the bodies I work on.

Every appointment is another chapter. 🤍

One of the things I’m most grateful for in my work is getting to be part of someone’s self-care. 🤎

There’s something pretty special about creating a space where people can slow down, breathe, and take care of themselves.

Feeling rich in all the ways that matter. ✨
