Noticing more hair in your brush, shower drain, or pillow? You’re not alone.
Many people search “why am I losing my hair?”, and the answer can vary.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most common causes of hair loss include:
• Genetics (male or female pattern hair loss)
• Hormonal changes
• Stress on the body
• Medical conditions
• Medications
• Nutritional deficiencies
Hair loss may develop gradually over time or appear suddenly after illness, stress, or hormonal shifts.
The good news is that many types of hair loss can be treated or improved, especially when addressed early.
If you’re experiencing hair thinning or shedding, Dr. Ginsburg, a board-certified dermatologist in Birmingham, can help determine the cause and discuss treatment options.

🐾 A very important reminder for patients using hair loss treatments 🐾
Topical minoxidil is a widely used and effective option for hair loss. However, recent research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology highlights a serious safety concern for households with pets, especially cats.
Even small amounts of exposure, such as licking skin, pillowcases, or bedding, can cause severe illness and may be fatal for cats.
As a dermatologist, I believe it’s essential to discuss pet safety when recommending hair loss treatments. If you use topical minoxidil and have pets at home, please take extra precautions:
• Wash hands thoroughly after application
• Allow the medication to fully dry
• Store products securely
• Keep pets away from treated skin and bedding
If these steps aren’t feasible, there may be alternative treatment options that are safer for pet-owning households. I encourage patients to talk with their dermatologist about what’s best for them and their pets.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma: What You Should Know
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common types of skin cancer. It often appears as a rough, scaly patch, a sore that won’t heal, or a firm, dome-shaped growth — and while it usually grows slowly, it can become serious if left untreated.
The good news? When found early, SCC is highly treatable.
⚠️ Watch for:
• Scaly or crusted patches
• Sores that bleed or don’t heal
• Wart-like or horn-like growths
• Pain, tenderness, or itching
Most SCCs develop on sun-exposed areas like the face, scalp, ears, hands, and arms — but they can appear anywhere.
If you notice a spot that’s changing, bleeding, or not healing, schedule a skin exam with Dr. Ginsburg, a board-certified dermatologist.

💋❄️ Dry, cracked lips don’t have to last until spring.
According to dermatologists from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), you can have soft, healthy lips year-round, even in winter.
If your lips are chapped, here’s what dermatologists recommend:
🚫 Stop using lip products that burn, sting, or tingle.
That sensation means irritation — not “working.”
Avoid ingredients like:
• Menthol, camphor, eucalyptus
• Fragrance or flavoring (mint, cinnamon, citrus)
• Salicylic acid
• Phenol
• Chemical sunscreens like oxybenzone
✅ Look for healing ingredients instead:
• Petrolatum (white petroleum jelly)
• Ceramides
• Shea butter
• Mineral oil
• Dimethicone
• Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (for SPF)
🌞 Yes — lips need SPF, even in winter!
Use a fragrance-free lip balm with SPF 30+ and reapply every 2 hours outdoors.
💧 More winter lip tips:
• Apply lip balm several times daily and before bed
• Drink plenty of water
• Stop licking, biting, or picking your lips
• Use a humidifier, especially at night
⏳ Most chapped lips improve in 2–3 weeks with proper care.
If they don’t — or if lips are persistently scaly, painful, or irritated — it may be time to see a dermatologist.
