Remembering professional wrestling legend High Chief Peter Maivia, who was born on this day in 1937!

The Flyin' Hawaiian wrestled in multiple promotions over a career spanning 1960-1982. In addition to promoting Polynesian Pro Wrestling and working NWA territories around the world, he spent four years as a star in the WWWF.

In the World Wide Wrestling Federation (later WWF), Maivia worked matches against top stars like Superstar Billy Graham. Turning heel in 1978, he challenged WWWF Champion Bob Backlund.

After ignoring health symptoms and pleas from family members to seek medical attention, Maivia was diagnosed with inoperable cancer in 1981. When he died from cancer in 1982, he was only 45 years-old.

The High Chief was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by his grandson The Rock Dwayne Johnson in 2008. His wife Lia Maivia is a member of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2024.
