Pyewacket was the supposed name of the familiar of a woman accused of witchcraft that was executed early in the Burning Times

Continuing on the theme of deep history, or 'How did we get into this mess?', it’s worth taking a look back to examine the Witch hunts, which swept across Europe in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries and made it to the U.S. in the Salem Witch Trials. Witches were real—but not who you think they were, neither evil Satan-worshippers nor sorceresses with superpowers, but ordinary women and men—mostly women—who were herbalists, healers, midwives and those who practiced folk customs and the remnants of older, pre-Christian Pagan traditions, somewhat like the curanderas today in Mexico who blend Christianity with older rites. And, a lot of them were simply women who offended a neighbor or who owned property someone else wanted! There are so many parallels between that time and this, so here’s my podcast that explores the connections and why the Witch persecutions are still influencing us today.
