🦬 How do bison stay cool in 90° weather?

Despite their rugged appearance, bison are built for the extremes of the Northern Plains.

In summer, they shed their thick winter coat, seek shade along river bottoms and draws, graze during the cooler hours of the day, and often face into the wind to help cool their bodies.

From scorching summers to brutal winters, bison have thrived on this landscape for thousands of years.

This week in ND were are getting a break from the abnormal high temps! Thank goodness!

🦬 What about the wind, dust, and prairie grit?

Life on the Plains isn’t always calm. Bison are equipped with thick skin, dense hair around their eyes and face, and powerful instincts that help them navigate dusty, windy conditions.

Rather than fighting the elements, they simply turn into them—using the wind to their advantage, whether cooling off in summer or weathering a prairie storm.

A little dust is just part of life in bison country. 🌾
