The LGBTQ+ Caucus at Virginia Tech is committed to advancing equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their families.
The caucus seeks to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals across the New River Valley. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Caucus at Virginia Tech formed in 1992 as an affiliate of the Women’s Network. The purpose of the Caucus is to improve the working and learning environment for LGBTQ+ members of Virginia Tech and the surrounding community. Membership is open to all Virginia Te
ch faculty, staff, graduate students, and individuals who support the objectives of the Caucus. By bringing concerns about retention, classroom climate, or other issues to the attention of the administration, providing educational programs to the larger community, and partnering with other campus groups like the LGBTQ+ Resource Center, HokiePRIDE, TransSpace, and others, to host public events, the Caucus aims to foster an atmosphere of understanding at the University, thereby improving productivity and quality of life at Virginia Tech for all employees and students. The Caucus works closely with various offices across campus to plan programs and increase awareness of diversity at Virginia Tech. We are also an active participant in the Virginia Tech Commission on Equal Opportunity and Diversity, with an appointed representative serving the caucus constituents. We also sponsor social gatherings such as the monthly Caucus Lunch and work with HokiePRIDE at Virginia in its monthly Lunch & Learn Q*nnection Series to foster community-wide connection and support for members of the different groups that make up the LGBTQ+ community at Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, and the surrounding communities. Other activities sponsored by the Caucus include the Lavender Achievement Ceremony, LGBTQ+ History Month, Queer in Appalachia, and Pride Week.
