Today is my final day as an esthetician, a career that I have enjoyed for 27 years. I have had the BEST clients who I've gotten quite fond of and coworkers who have supported me along the way- thank you to all! "Trending"
"You can never be too rich or too thin." This quote is famously ascribed to Wallis Simpson (Duchess of Windsor) who spoke of the importance of wealth and appearance. It seems to be as relevant now as it was 60+ years ago when she said it. The public’s obsession with shows like The Real Housewives, Selling Sunset and Dubai Bling is something I can't quite explain, but celebrity culture, TikTok and Instagram have permeated throughout society~ contributing the good, the bad and the ugly in how we all should look.

Fun fact: cosmetic surgery has increased over 115% since the year 2000. This includes non-invasive treatments like Botox, laser/chemical peels, etc. I'm all for some of these and to be honest looking good has been a boon to the beauty/skin care industry. However, some of these "trends" are so silly I just gotta talk about them. :D

Tattooed freckles. What the? To me they just look like age spots. High Skull Beauty. This asthetic comes from China where, besides the baby face trend (ie- looking like an anime cartoon), young people are injecting filler and even plastic into the skull making it elongated to make the face appear smaller. Elf Ears. Ears that stuck out used to be an embarrassment and could be surgically pinned back, but now some are getting them enhanced to look like pixie ears. I blame Lord of the Rings. Weight loss fad. What was once a dangerous addiction like anorexia, it seems weight loss drugs like Ozempic are giving some people those same results. However, taking it to the extreme is not pretty. Losing weight fast can result in a saggy face and an older looking appearance. Big nose trend. Say what? So, we can now embrace our natural proboscis? Fantastic!

Body modification has been around for millennia: foot binding, corset waist (still a thing), skull reshaping, lip plates and all manner of piercings and tattoos. Today you can change your eye color, create dimples, have l***a reshaping and even get lash and brow transplants. With cosmetic surgeries getting more widespread around the world, it will be interesting to see what's trending next! ;)
