Names matter.
For decades, "Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome" focused attention on the ovaries, when many women were actually struggling with insulin resistance, inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, fertility challenges, and hormone imbalances long before anyone ever looked at an ultrasound.
In 2026, a landmark consensus statement published in The Lancet officially recommended changing the name to PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome) after a 14-year international effort involving 56 organizations and input from more than 22,000 patients and healthcare professionals.
While the name may be new, the science isn't. We've known for years that this condition is far more than an ovarian disorder.
Hopefully this shift helps move the conversation beyond periods and fertility and toward the bigger picture: metabolic health, hormone balance, and whole-body wellness.
