I don’t know exactly what I want to come out of this post, but It was on my heart and I feel as though it’s an important conversation to bring up amongst with my fellow Minnesota service providers. Lately, I’ve been feeling like there is a disconnect between the communities we serve and who we choose to include and represent within our brands and our content. I follow A LOT of service providers in Minnesota, and I’ve noticed a lack of representation of dark skinned Black women in the content I see online. And before anyone misunderstands me, I am not telling anyone what to post, who to post, who should be their client, or how they should run their business. I’m not writing this to call anyone out or make anyone feel bad about their content. I understand that every business has a different clientele and every brand has a different target audience. But I do think we need to have an honest conversation about the privilege that comes with not having to think about this. There is a privilege in being able to create content, receive engagement, build a brand, and market your services without ever having to consider whether dark skinned Black women see themselves represented in your work. And if we’re really being honest, sometimes the exclusion is BLATANT. It’s hard for me to see a service provider who specializes in curly hair have an entire brand photoshoot without a single dark skinned Black woman when we KNOW there are plenty of beautiful women who could represent that brand. The same goes for beauty brands. Go look through the content of some of your favorite brow, lash, hair, skincare, and beauty brands. Look at their campaigns, website, social media & models. Who do you see?
