So most of the people who follow me know I'm moving to Dallas Texas the first week of October. However, for those who don't and want their horses worked on before I go, now is your time. Contact me now, or you're out of luck for the foreseeable future :)

Well now, that's sure interesting!

Ooooo. A good video of sore withers. Most horses aren't this dramatic. I couldn't video both the kicking and him attempting to bite me head :) Believe it or not, this behavior is much improved over when I first started working with this guy. Now at least he doesn't actively aim for me with hooves and teeth. At least most of the time :)

Spring riding and driving is coming! One of the best ways to get started is some body work to help get your equine partner in crime ready to work after standing around the round bale all winter. That's as hard on them as the couch time has been on us :)

I would love to know if massage could help performance at multi day shows. You know how on that second day, your horse's body and sense of humor are less than ideal? Schedule me in if I'm at a show and let's see if it helps. !

Stretching after exercise isn’t actually doing what you think it’s doing It is important to understand the difference between stretching for recovery and stretching for remodeling.

Miss Rosie made it in to my list because she was cross cantering for her for her girl right before their 4-h show on Saturday. She seems to have pulled her hamstring a bit and had some tension in her mid back shortening her muscles on the right side so it was hard to use the right hind in the left lead. Hopefully we got her loosened up enough to have a great show. Good luck tomorrow Rosie and Reese!

It must be a TB weekend, this is Bane (greatest name ever) who is a 17 dressage horse. He was a high level eventer who had a suspensory injury some years ago, and his owner wanted to know if I thought the injury was still active. I'm excited to share the protocol for rehabbing the hind end, and to see if we can get this guy back to more consistent soundness. I'm sure you'll be seeing a lot more of Bane as we see what can be done.

So in conjunction with the video of Ziva doing the release, this is the technical information about why it's important and relevant enough to work hard to perfect my technique.

04/23/2018

This is my personal horse, Ziva. At the Hoosier Horse Fair, I discovered several of the things I already do regularly are actually better done coordinated together for the hyoid. I was also not doing the tongue release long enough. My thought was that it was to release the tension in the tongue, and as the tongue lengthened and got more mobile, we accomplished the goal. Waiting for an actual release while holding the tongue isn't something I did. So, we experimented at home, like you do. On the right side (for a left side release) she paused her tongue movement, and about 30 sec -1 min later, gave a big sigh. I was impressed. Then I moved to the left side (for a right side release) and this happened. I eventually did the second part of the release which is at the shoulder, at which point she released almost immediately. Sorry for the length of the video, but I was so stunned by the whole thing it seemed worth posting the whole thing. Feel free to skip to about 20-30 sec from the end once you see what happens. This is why ongoing education and refinement of technique is important. You never stop learning.

One of my favorite views, looking up into the eyes of a horse going through the stages of grief to relax the poll by resting the weight of their head on my shoulder. It takes patience and persistence, but this is one of the most rewarding techniques I use. (and the one most likely to get me bashed in the head with a big ole horse head)

Heartsong is new to Southport Equestrian, and this is our first time working together. Heartsong is extremely stoic. I was beginning to doubt my mad skills when he finally started to indicate he was ready to show SOMETHING. I worked my butt off for these fairly subtle indicators that he was finally starting to relax and release. My guess is that once the lights when out and I left, he was yawning and shaking his head like crazy. He was stoic about showing his releases, but his body wasn't without discomfort, that was apparent. I'll be curious how things go next time he's on my docket.
