Governor Wolf Risks Countless Lives by Keeping Salons Closed

Governor Tom Wolf insists that he is saving lives by keeping salons, Barber shops, and Nail Salons closed. It has become apparent to me that Governor Wolf is actually creating a greater health risk by his actions.

In the last couple of weeks, a bill was passed in the PA House of Representatives and the PA Senate that would allow Salons, Barbershops, Nail Salons, and other businesses to open in the yellow phase of recovery (HB2388). The bill went to Governor Wolf’s desk and he quickly vetoed. The bill returned to the House for an override vote and in true political fashion, The House voted along party lines. The House failed to overturn Governor Wolf by only 21 votes. House Bill 2388 is still on the table and can still be upheld with a re-vote.

Governor Tom Wolf’s insistence on keeping salons, barber shops, and Nail Salons closed has caused thousands of hairdressers, barbers, and nail techs to go rogue, take to the road, and make several house calls per day. My clients, stylists, and manicurists tell me everyday that clients have had enough and are going to get their services done whether we accommodate them or not. I get it and totally understand. However, thousands of service providers making several house calls per day is a disaster waiting to happen. Imagine how many people one person could infect by making several stops per day, then multiply that by thousands. This is a fact and not an opinion and Governor Wolf, by his actions, has caused a situation that could end in a disaster, setting us back for months.

Every time we leave the house, we put ourselves at risk. I cannot guarantee that getting your hair or nails done is 100% safe. What I can guarantee is that getting your hair or nails done in my salon is as safe or safer than going to the grocery, convenience, or hardware store. I don’t see anyone there constantly sanitizing everything that is touched. I can also guarantee that going to a controlled sanitary environment for your beauty needs is safer than having beauty professionals traveling from house to house, doing hair and nails in basements, garages, kitchens, and bathrooms.

My fellow salon and barbershop owners and myself have worked tirelessly and have spent tens of thousands of dollars in PPE and sanitation equipment and supplies. We have created the safest environment possible for our precious staff and clientele. We have the masks, gloves, epa sanitizing products, uv light sanitizers, plexiglass shields, and air filters in place and ready to go. We’ve also have procedures in place to accommodate all CDC guidelines and beyond. Our Salon and employees have been barbacide certified and have advanced training in proper disinfection and sanitation. Governor Wolf refuses to acknowledge the fact that after the medical industry, our industry is one of the most highly trained in infection and disease prevention.

My fellow salon and barbershop owners need your help. Please share this post as we are attempting to get Governor Wolf to enact an executive order by Tuesday to open salons and barbershops in the yellow. Please consider contacting your Representative and state senator (ours are Liz Hanbidge and Daylin Leach) and ask them to vote Yeah to override Governor Wolf’s Veto of HB2388, especially those that voted Nay, for the reasons stated above. Also ask them to recommend Governor Wolf execute an executive order to allow salons and barbershops to open in the yellow phase for the reasons stated above. Lastly, consider contacting Governor Tom Wolf and recommend the same and that by keeping us closed he is jeopardizing the health and welfare of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I have also included a link to my reopening plan to see just how serious we are about public health and safety.

A HUGE thank you to all the Moms who came out last night for our first "Annual Mother's Day Retreat." We hope they all enjoyed themselves and had a nice relaxing night. We also want to thank our massage therapist, Cody Momentum Fitness, for providing massages to our moms and staff, Vynecrest Vineyards & Winery for donating wine to our retreat and our raffle, and the rest of generous donors who made this night special for our moms: Citrus Salon and Day Spa, Posh Nail Salon, Portolese Family Chiropractic, Whole Body Yoga Studio.

We hope to see everyone again next year for our second "Annual Mother's Day Retreat!"
