Welcome to our “What’s your story?” Series. We asked 20 natural hair enthusiasts if they would share their natural hair journey. We are so excited to introduce you to and her story. Here’s what she had to say…

When I was younger, I used to hate my hair. I grew up in the suburbs and was used to everyone around me having straight hair. I would beg my mom to straighten mine so that I could fit in.

I cried whenever when I saw her pull out the beads, berets or knocker balls; I begged her not to twist my hair because I didn’t want to “look ghetto.” It was hard enough to fit in when I was the only black girl in the class, I didn’t want my hair to be another thing that made me look different. Some time around 3rd grade, I decided that I would be taking control over how my hair looked.

I never got a relaxer or anything like that, but I wasn’t giving my hair the love it deserved. If my hair wasn’t straightened, it was pulled back in a heavily gelled ponytail. And if there was ever a special event going on, you better believe I was having my hair straightened for it. I felt like my look wasn’t complete unless my frizzy curls were hidden.

I really don’t know what changed, but in middle school, I found myself experimenting with my natural hair. I was tired of the pony tails and flat irons. I spent hours looking up YouTube videos on how to style curly hair. I had unrealistic expectations and often got frustrated when my 4a curls didn’t look like the 3b styles I saw on Pinterest, but I kept trying anyways. I tested out different hair products, blocked off whole days to wash my hair, made my own deep conditioning masks, and even diy’d my own headbands.

My routine looks a lot different than it did when I was 11; wash days don’t take nearly as long, I’ve mastered the twist out, have embraced shrinkage, learned how to choose products and hairstyles for my hair type, and mastered the wash-n-go. My curls are such a huge part of my style, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. I’m so grateful for the middle school version of me that took the time to start this hair journey.

My natural hair is important to me because it’s so unique and expresses who I am! It’s also such a special feature that sets me apart. I haven’t always liked my curly hair, but I have learned to love it more and more everyday!

Welcome to our “What’s your story?” Series. We asked 20 natural hair enthusiasts if they would share their natural hair journey. We are so excited to introduce you to Ashley and her story. Here’s what she had to say…

My journey to embracing my natural hair officially started in December of 2019. One day, after washing my hair, I looked in the mirror at the heat/color damage and realized I was over it. I decided that my New Year’s resolution would be to grow out my curls and eventually big chop. At the start of 2020 I did just that.

By March 2020 the pandemic had started, which gave me nothing but time to watch YouTube videos on how to transition and what products to use. The transitioning phase was tough. I had 2 different textures of hair for a year. I was finally ready to chop the damage off! I chopped about 5 inches off all at once. It was a huge adjustment having shorter hair and learning how to work with my new found curls, but it was so worth it in the end.

If you are thinking about embracing your natural curls take the leap and do it! I get so many compliments on my hair. My favorite thing about my hair is that it is so versatile! I can do wash & go’s, twist outs, braids, blow outs, rod sets, and the list goes on! The journey to loving your natural hair is so personal and I hope everyone gets to experience it! ♥️

Welcome to our “What’s your story?” Series. We asked 20 natural hair enthusiasts if they would share their natural hair journey. We are so excited to introduce you to Shayna and her story. Here’s what she had to say…

I was raised by a Polynesian family. I was not really associated with my African-American side because my parent had split and their relationship wasn’t healthy unfortunately. My mother and my grandmother tried everything they could to “help my hair”. We tried at home hair relaxers, and even went into salons to get my hair permed. Although I enjoyed having my hair straight (at times), It just wasn’t me and for that, I hated it. Once I got into seventh grade and had my hair permed (for what I decided was going to be) the last time, I told my mom and my grandma (who had much different hair than mine by the way), that I no longer wanted to perm my hair. That’s when I officially went natural. From time to time after that, as I wore my hair in its natural state, I would definitely hear different opinions on my hair, and even get made fun of, but that negative treatment was just a few and far in between. Any other time, I’ve always received compliments and praise for wearing my hair in its natural state!! I have always appreciated the support. I love my natural hair. I’ve never felt more me in my life. I love that when someone says “you look beautiful” or “I love your hair” that they’re actually talking about my natural hair and me! I encourage anyone who has natural curls or even natural straight hair, to embrace it!! Its not bad if you don’t wear your hair natural, but I think there’s a bigger underlying lesson that we each need to learn- you need to accept you for you and love you for you. Once you do that, you understand your true beauty and your true uniqueness, and that something that you can’t find anywhere else. Although it’s tough and no one is perfect at it, try to embrace all things you and watch the magic happen!
