Picture her for a second, the little girl you used to be, and imagine her actually seeing you now. Not the version of yourself you criticise in the mirror, not the one who never feels like she is doing enough, but you as she would see you, through her eyes, from where she was standing back then. She would look at you with stars in her eyes, because you are everything she was quietly hoping she might one day get to be, and she never dared believe it was possible.

She dreamt of a life like yours when dreaming was all she had. Safe. Free. Yours. A place where nobody could hurt her, where she was not braced all the time, where she got to just live instead of survive. To you it is ordinary now, the background of your daily life, the stuff you barely notice. To her it was the impossible thing she clung to in the dark, the fantasy she escaped into, the future she could only imagine and never quite believe would actually come. And you are living inside it.

She would not see the flaws you fixate on. She would not care about the things you have not achieved, the ways you think you are falling short, the endless list of not enough that runs in your head. She would look straight past all of that and see the woman who got out, who built something real, who became strong and free and whole in ways she desperately needed someone to be. She would be amazed by you, the way a child is amazed, completely and without conditions.

That is the view worth holding onto, because it is truer than the harsh one you usually use. You are so used to measuring yourself against everything you have not done that you forget to see what you actually are, which is the answer to a frightened little girl's deepest hopes. She would not be disappointed in you. She would be in awe of you. She would look at the life you built and the woman you became and she would light up, because you are proof that everything she survived for was worth it.

The next time you are hard on yourself, try seeing yourself the way she would instead. Not through the critical voice you inherited from a mother who never let you feel like enough, but through the eyes of the child who would look at you with stars in hers. She is still in there, and she is proud of you, and she cannot believe what you made of the life she fought to give you. Let her see you sometimes. Let her pride be the thing you measure yourself against, because she is the one who was actually there, and she thinks you are extraordinary.

Have we lost touch of the beauty of an aging woman? She is powerful beyond measure; she has an essence about her that screams strength, wisdom and knowledge. She is a role model, she has many stories to tell. She shines where she stands. She is outrageous, she is wild, but most importantly she is free of the demands that society puts on her. She is confident; she believes in herself, she lives her life by her own set of rules.

She finally becomes comfortable and settles into her life. She gets this time to experience things that she felt that she never could before because now the rules have changed. Her life is written on the lines on her face, the grey in her hair, and the age on her hands, and the shape of her body changes but it doesn't mean that it cannot be loved.

Why do we not look up to these women? We can learn from them and be inspired by them, and understand that age only strengthens beauty. It’s time to praise these women for what they have been through; they have survived life, for they are the brightest shining lights leaving their mark, with grace, charm and elegance. So here’s to the older woman, may she continue to shine.

But who didn’t know how disruptive this would be.
Who didn’t know the storm they’d invited in.
Who didn’t realise the tears you’d shed.
The tempest ripping you apart.

Naked. Vulnerable. Raw. On your knees.
Feelings that threaten to strangle you.
Patterns that strive to break you.
Yet you persist.

The messy stark reality of healing.
Fires blazing all around.
Burning you to ashes.
Scorching your bones.
Shredding all that you know.

I see you. I am you.
I Love you.

The only way to the other side is through.
Through the darkness.
Through the engulfing agony.

To be you. To know you. To love you.

I see you. I am you.
I Love you.

And on the other side of this, we will laugh together.
We will smile and be joyful together.
Celebrating.

Until the next spiral of healing.
