A proper mustache takes time. It’s been about four weeks getting this from above the lip to over the lip. During that process, I’ve only been making very small maintenance trims to keep things growing in the right direction while preventing rough split ends from taking hold.

Beyond that, a lot of the work comes down to training the mustache. Mustache wax, a comb and even using your fingers throughout the day can help guide the shape and encourage the hairs to lay properly over time.

The awkward stages are part of the journey. Stay patient with it. When in doubt, grow it out.

If you’re going to grow your beard out, it starts with a clear goal.

A set number of weeks. A date on the calendar. Something to work toward.

Without that, it becomes far too easy to make small adjustments that slowly take you off track. A trim here, a cleanup there… until the length is gone and you’re starting over again.

Growth requires intention. Set the goal. Stay disciplined. Let it come together.

Growing your mustache past your lip is a different experience entirely.

After keeping mine shorter for some time, I decided to let it grow and it quickly becomes clear that it requires a bit more awareness. Eating, drinking and daily habits all shift slightly.

Like any stage of growth, there’s an awkward phase. But there’s also something to be said for leaning into it. It’s an opportunity to explore your beard in a new way and see what it’s capable of becoming.

Set a goal. Stay patient. When in doubt, grow it out.

Growing your beard out for length starts with intention. One of the first adjustments I make is lowering the neckline. It creates a stronger foundation and allows the new growth to come in with purpose.

From here, the real challenge begins. The next couple of weeks require restraint. Growth is never perfectly even and the temptation to shape too early is where most guys set themselves back.

Set a clear goal. Give it time. Let it come together.
