I'm hosting a Dreadlocks Maintenance class!

If you are a client of mine who has locs and have been wanting to learn how to crochet your own hair at home, this is an opportunity for you to learn from me in a group setting!

I will be sharing the exact method I use to maintain your locs and how I do mine at home, so that you are well equipped to tend to your own roots in the case that you are attending a special occasion, interview, or just want to be more self sufficient with your own maintenance.

This will also come in handy when I leave for India and am unavailable to take appointments for a few months beginning January 2024.

The cost of the class is $200 and payment options are available via Afterpay when you check out. To register, click on the link below. RSVP as soon as you are able to as space is limited.

If you have any questions please reply to this email!
I hope to see you there!

Check out our event on Sunday, Oct 8, 2023.

Rethinking Thanksgiving

As most of us know, Thanksgiving, dates back to November 1621, when the newly arrived Pilgrims and the Wampanoag tribe gathered at what settlers called Plymouth - the former summer tribal village - for an autumn harvest celebration, an event regarded as America’s “first Thanksgiving.”

The preceding winter had been a harsh one for the colonists. Pilgrims that arrived on the Mayflower died or suffered from illness and malnutrition due to their lack of knowledge, skills, and tools to endure the journey and survive in the Americas.

It was only after Tisquantum, more commonly known as Squanto, the only surviving member of the Patuxet tribe killed by a smallpox outbreak, taught them how to river fish and cultivate corn were they able to flourish. The bounty from this first autumn harvest - entirely due to the help and generosity of Indigenous people - was used to prepare the feast.

After this moment in history and the subsequent violent actions of colonizers, Anglo-Americans would go on to joyously celebrate this day without consideration or acknowledgment of the historical pain and suffering Indigenous people incurred.

On November 27th, 1970, The United American Indians of New England declared Thanksgiving a National Day of Mourning. Learn more here (http://www.uaine.org/) . Many will fast from sundown the night before to sundown the day of to remember the hardship and genocide their ancestors faced.

Non-Native people have been called on to educate themselves and their families on the real history of this holiday. To take time to learn the tribe/s whose land we are on, and to look into the tribe’s struggles and donate to help.

In an effort to rethink how we celebrate Thanksgiving, I encourage us all to consider the damage we create by continuing to live in a soft world bleached of hard truths.

I have spent decades blind and willfully ignorant to the bloodier side of our Thanksgiving story.
It seems now is as good as any to change that by acknowledging the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute tribes and their ancestral territory on which I live, work and benefit from. I acknowledge the historic and ongoing injustices committed against the Native peoples of this land and am committed to rethinking Thanksgiving and more.

In gratitude,
Masyn

...
Before / After

When our grays start taking over and the dark color you’ve always had is getting harder to maintain, switch to a lighter blonde with low lights.

Over time, we will make this a slightly cooler tone so that the grays are masked and the grow out is softer.

This dream boat is getting ready to turn 50 and isn’t feeling a day over 40!

Try something new and keep feeling fierce!

To our beloved clients

Hey Mylk House Folks…

On Monday, April 20th, Governor Polis announced that he would be lifting the Stay-At-Home order for the State of Colorado by April 27th. This new direction walks back his original order scheduled to be lifted on April 30th. A new Public Health Order, Safer-At-Home, will begin on Monday April 27th. Salons among some other businesses will be allowed to open on May 1st with strict precautions in place. See details here: https://assets.boulderoem.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/4.22.20-gov-polis-safer-at-home-one-pager.pdf?fbclid=IwAR0ewIUk_V2NVW0YkDDiBgOZ5DRbLNL-7fiNI4JLRtRiuzgtbQ-onIZFg9c

If you are following the World Health Organization, Dr Fauci or other credible science outlets, you are aware of the concerns and requests that non-essential people continue to stay home and social distance even though some governors are making other decisions. Around the world and in our country, countries and states that rushed to reopen are now showing spikes in cases with a second round of infections considerably more intense.

All of that said, as part of our communities working class, we have lost most of the government protections our Governor and science were providing and are now in a moral dilemma of weighing our economic survival with our personal health and potentially the health of our family members and clients if we choose to stay open or closed.

As a business that provides non essential services to the public, we have talked as a shop about being put in this position and how we could move forward. It is conceivable that this pandemic will continue for at least a year or more. It is also reasonable to think our economy will be opened and closed based on need if our community experiences spikes in COVID cases.

Each of us are in the process of developing the right path for ourselves. Some of us are going to continue a quarantine practice indefinitely while others may begin working limited hours. These decisions are not being made lightly and we humbly ask for everyone's patience and grace during this unprecedented time.

To that end, we will be implementing the following new requirements for all appointments until further notice.

Staff hours will be staggered and limited to lessen the amount of people in our space at any one time.
You will need to bring and wear a mask during your appointment. If you do not have one, there are several people making them locally and easily found through simple internet searches.
Our waiting room will be closed indefinitely. We ask that you wait in your car until your stylist comes out to get you for your appointment. We will disinfect as best we can between appointments
If you choose to have an appointment, you will release Mylk House from any responsibility if you contract COVID-19. In other words, you are entering at your own risk just like a grocery store, etc.
If you would like to purchase product only, please text or call in advance so that it can be prepared for a pickup.

Finally, we have appreciated all the kind and concerned notes, emails and texts we have received from you. These are unprecedented times. This has been an incredibly challenging and scary time for all of us. We hope that you and your families are safe and well.
It is our hope we are able to return to some sense of normal soon.
