Book of the month:

Matrescence by Lucy Jones.

One of two most often recommended works on the topic. The transformation of a woman into a mother is profound. I described it within myself as crossing over into a new group of women who UNDERSTAND.

The topic needs attention since this transformation involves every part of our beings. We become new creatures, body, soul, and spirit. The word sounds like adolescence because the process is no less dramatic.

Ms. Jones writes poetically, metaphorically, and viscerally at times as she tells her own stories. Full of description and statistics, research facts, and personal stories, the book has been worth my time.
While I disagree with her philosophy on some topics, this is a solid read for anyone wanting a meaty description of matrescence.

I’ll be reading the other most highly recommended book on the topic next month, so stay tuned.

Paying for doula support:
Many are convinced that doula support is the right choice, but feel it’s not in the budget.

Let’s explore some options:
Missouri Medicaid now pays for doula support. Many doulas can accept this, myself included.

TRICARE military insurance now pays for doula support. I can accept this as well.

Many major employers, such as Walmart, now offer doula support as an employee benefit. Check with HR at your place of employment. Even if the answer is no, the interest will spark change.

Most doulas will accept payment on a payment plan. As you interview doulas, begin early in the pregnancy and ask for gradual payment options.

Friends and family may be willing to chip in, or loan the money and extend the payment timeline. “Doula funds” can be added on shower registries and wishlists. This option can be a good one if remote friends and family want to help.
