Selfcare Tip: Oil pulling
As the natural health and wellness movement rolls on full steam ahead, many people are looking for alternatives to traditional methods of personal care. There is a lot of controversy around the ingredients and effectiveness of commercial toothpaste and as people are starting to understand the impacts of ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate, hydrated silica, fluoride and propylene glycol, theyâre turning to some old-school methods of cleaning their teeth.
You may have heard the term âoil pullingâ come up recently, but unless youâve tried it for yourself, chances are youâre not even sure what this technique really means. We are going to cover the basics and benefits of the technique known as oil pullingâŠ
Oil pulling is not some new wave health practice. Itâs actually an ancient Ayurvedic medicinal practice that dates back over 3,000 years. Itâs a process where you swish a small amount of coconut oil around in your mouth in order to kill unfriendly bacteria, keeping your whole mouth clean and fresh.
The term âoil pullingâ refers to the way you work the oil in your mouth by pulling, pushing, and sucking it through your teeth to get into every nook and cranny where bacteria like to hide. The theory behind the practice is that the fatty molecules in the oil attract and bond with the fatty membrane that surrounds each microorganism cell. Once you spit out the oil after it has done itâs job, the collected bacteria goes out with it.
The text claims that oil pulling can cure about 30 systemic diseases including chronic headaches, migraines, diabetes and several skin conditions. While this ancient practice is fairly simple and straight forward, there are many misconceptions about how itâs done.
To pull, put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and slowly start to swish, swirl and âpullâ it around your mouth and through your teeth. Set a timer and continue to do this for 20 minutes before spitting it into a trash bin and thoroughly rinsing out your mouth. As the oil gets swished around it becomes cloudy and white and becomes a thinner consistency as it mixes with saliva. Make sure you do not swallow the oil as it will contain all the toxins and bacteria youâve gotten rid of.

What is Anxiety???
Anxiety is an intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. Fast heart rate, rapid breathing, sweating, and feeling tired may occur.
Anxiety can be normal in stressful situations such as public speaking or taking a test. Anxiety is only an indicator of underlying disease when feelings become excessive, all-consuming, and interfere with daily living.
In the most simplest explanation, anxiety is the indication of stress in the body. There are several natural and homeopathic ways to manage stress and anxiety.
Deep Breathing
Breathing is a necessity of life that usually occurs without much thought. When you breathe in, blood cells receive oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a waste product that's carried back through your body and exhaled.
Improper breathing can upset the oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange and contribute to anxiety, panic attacks, fatigue, and other physical and emotional disturbances.1
The next time youâre feeling anxious, there are a variety of anxiety breathing exercises to try. Learn how to use breathing exercises to help relieve feelings of anxiety and stress.
Calm Anxiety in Three Steps:
Open your attention to the present moment. The invitation is to bring attention to our experience in a wider and more open manner that isnât really involved with selecting or choosing or evaluating, but simply holdingâbecoming a container for thoughts, feelings or sensations in the body that are present and seeing if we can watch them from one moment to the next.
Focus on the breath. Let go of that widescreen and bring a focus thatâs much more concentrated and centered on breathing in one region of your bodyâthe breath of the belly, or the chest, or the nostrils, or anywhere that the breath makes itself known, and keep that more concentrated focus.
Bring your attention to your body. Become aware of sensations in the body as a whole, sitting with the whole body, the whole breath, once again we move back to a wider and spacious container of attention for our experience.
Mindfulness & Meditation
Mindfulness and meditation for anxiety is a growing field that can help you navigate the many way. Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what weâre doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by whatâs going on around us.
Leading expert Jon Kabat-Zinn describes it as âawareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally,â adding: âin the service of self-understanding and wisdom.â
When you become aware of the present moment, you gain access to resources you may not have realized were with you all along, a stillness at your core. An awareness of what you need and donât need in your life thatâs with you all the time. You may not be able to change your situation, but mindfulness practice offers the space to change your response to your situation.
