One thing that was drilled into us in cosmetology school was that there are some topics you should avoid talking about in the salon. Foremost of those is politics. You never know who is listening and who you might anger. You'll hurt your business if you're not careful. There are clients I know it is safe to talk politics around, but mostly I've tried to remember that lesson.
But the times we are living through require more than caution. The politics of our time are more than disagreements about how to balance the deficit. These are fundamental disputes over who is allowed to exist here and who isn't. Disputes about human rights. Abuses of power. Accountability of crimes. Due process. Moral imperatives.
And silence is not good enough. Silence does not lead to change, and change is crucial to our survival, as a nation and as a democracy. So I'm speaking in the best way I know how. Art is my language. And this peice is not up for interpretation. If you don't agree with me, that's fine, I don't want your business anyway.
