Retinol is one of my all-time favorite home-care products, and the reason is in the science.

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative. Once absorbed, it converts to retinoic acid, which binds to retinoic acid receptors inside skin cells. It works on a DNA level to stimulate collagen and elastin and speeds cell turnover.

The form matters as much as the strength:

• Retinyl esters: gentlest starting point for sensitive skin
• Retinol, well-studied middle ground in my home-care routines
• Retinaldehyde: converts in one step, so it’s generally more active
• Encapsulated/time-release formulas: release gradually, so tolerance is often better

That’s why I step my clients up rather than start strong. Steady beats intense.
