Let my psychology, loving brain nerd out on you for a minute
1. Human touch can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping the body shift from “fight-or-flight” toward a calmer rest-and-digest state.
2. Safe, comforting touch can reduce the body’s stress response.
- Positive touch has been associated with lower stress and increased feelings of calm and emotional well-being.
3. Touch sends powerful signals to the brain through sensory nerves.
- Slow, gentle pressure can stimulate touch receptors that communicate safety, comfort, and connection to the nervous system.
Safe human touch > Happy Regulated Nervous System >Happy Regulated Human 👏🏻🫶🏻
1. Your nervous system is your body’s communication network.
It helps your brain communicate with virtually every part of your body from your muscles and organs to your skin.
2. It helps control your “automatic” functions.
— Your nervous system helps regulate things you don’t have to consciously think about, like heart rate, breathing, digestion, body temperature, and sleep.
3. A balanced nervous system helps you respond appropriately to life.
You need your “fight-or-flight” system when there’s danger, but you also need your “rest-and-digest” system to relax, recover, digest food, sleep, and recharge.
A healthy nervous system knows how to shift gears when needed.
I think about those moments when I’m running around trying to complete 10 tasks at one time. My heart is racing, I feel warm, my breath is shallow … that’s fight or flight.
Is the laundry life or death .. is the dirty dishes going to kill me … NO.
I have to physically stop myself for a moment and take some breaths and remind my body that I’m not in a situation where I need my fight or flight .. it’s just chores.
This is your reminder that next time your trying to accomplish all the things and running around your house or office like a tiger is chasing you. Stop. Take a few slow breaths and remind your body that it’s not that serious.
