Hi fellow “Dreamers” Dr. Gottman has such a warm and direct way of breaking this down. It is interesting that John states it in this way “consider a 4th time.” In my sessions with couples I encourage two things: say it with love and remain curious about your partner. What is the “why” behind the partner not being able to let a grudge go? What would it mean to the partner if they did let the fudge go? In this life it is my core belief as a person and a Master therapist, first we have self-compassion for one’s self and then we are able to radiate that compassion out to others…consider a 4th time…

For any couples out there Dr. Peterson is pointing out the remedy…creating safety for each other where both partners can bring all of who they are be completely vulnerable with each other’s hearts AND be able to trust that each other will “not run away.” It also speaks to the importance of the pursue-withdraw dynamic.

For any couples there who might see this…”SAY IT LIKE YOU’RE ON MY SIDE” and rid yourself of that harshness to your partner and self!
