These days most of us are doing our best to reduce our carbon footprint. From eating more locally-sourced food to grabbing our bikes over taking the car, we’re reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, thus saving money and helping keep the environment from swirling down the toilet.
But ever think about what gasoline by-products might also be lurking in your hair products, not to mention leaking into your bloodstream? Ew.
Here are a 3 common hair care ingredients that might be working against your best efforts.
Petrolatum
Not only is it crazy difficult to get out of your hair, it’s one of the David Suzuki Foundation’s ‘Dirty Dozen’. Also known as petroleum jelly or Vaseline, it’s also the main ingredient of one popular dreadlock care product prominently labelled ’100% Beeswax’! What the…?
Mineral Oil
Another member of the petroleum family, mineral oil is a byproduct of the distillation of petroleum in producing gasoline from crude oil. Mineral oil is commonly called ‘Baby Oil’, which no one thinks to question because it’s gotta be safe if it’s for babies, right? Maybe for baby dinosaurs, which, when you think about it… is pretty much what’s going in your hair by way of this clear, oily, nonwashable stuff.
Microcrystalline Wax
Wax is wax, right? Er… turns out no. Microcrystalline wax is produced by de-oiling petrolatum as part of the petroleum refining process, and is heavily refined itself for odor and colour removal. This wax is completely insoluble in both water and alcohol, and requires the chemical ether to remove it from anything it touches. Unless you’re one of those people who see nothing wrong with using Krazy Glue in their dreads, we’re pretty sure microcrystalline wax would be the wrong ingredient to include in a hair product, for the planet AND for you.
Yikes. Luckily, we’ve got tons of ways to educate ourselves on the alternatives, and tons of all-natural ingredient options that work just as well as refined baby dinosaur oil in your styling products. Probably better.
Uses of Echinacea
This showy perennial was used by the Native Americans and adopted by the early settlers as a medicine. Members of the medical profession in early America relied heavily on echinacea, but it fell from favor with the advent of pharmaceutical medicine and antibiotics. Many physicians are rediscovering the benefits of echinacea. Many forms of echinacea are available to choose from; Germany has registered more than 40 different echinacea products.
Long used for infectious diseases and poor immune function, echinacea extractions also are used today to help treat influenza, colds, chronic fatigue syndrome, and AIDS. Research has shown echinacea stimulates the body's natural immune function. It does so by increasing the activity of white blood cells, raising the level of interferon, and stimulating blood cells to engulf invading microbes. Echinacea also increases the production of substances the body produces naturally to fight cancers and disease.

Pomegranate: ancient fruit, modern skin healer
pomegranate seeds
Antioxidant-rich pomegranate seeds
It’s plump, it’s juicy and it’s one of history’s most revered natural remedies — it’s the ever-so-pretty pomegranate.
We absolutely love this divine ruby-coloured wonder fruit for its powerful antioxidant properties and its nourishing effect on skin.
Native to Iran, Saudi Arabia, Northern India, Bengal, and Southern Asia, it is cultivated widely throughout the Middle East, India, southeast Asia, and parts of Africa.
The succulent pomegranate features prominently in the mythological and spiritual traditions of cultures around the world, with every part of the plant (root, bark, flowers, fruit, leaves) used for healing in Ayurvedic medicine.
Pomegranate oil is an incredibly nutrient-rich oil, and one of the more expensive oils due to the fact it takes around 90 kilos of fresh pomegranates to make half a kilo of oil!
A 2006 study from the University of Michigan Medical School showed that pomegranate oil promotes regeneration of the epidermis and researchers from the University of Wisconsin found it had potential anti-cancer effects.
Pomegranate oil is packed with antioxidants and contains polyphenols, powerful antioxidants known to fight free radicals that damage and age the skin. The oil extends the life of fibroblasts, the cells that give skin its strength and resilience and are responsible for the production of collagen and elastin.
The oil is also one of the only plant sources of punicic acid. Taken from the botanical name for pomegranate, Punica granatum, this potent omega-5 oil is a compound closely related to conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is being studied for its anti-cancer properties. Not only that, it’s loaded with vitamins A, B5, B6, C, E, K, potassium, folic acid and iron.
Fast facts about pomegranates:
There are over 700 varieties of pomegranate
Ancient Egyptians were often buried with pomegranates.
The English word ‘pomegranate’ comes from the Latin words for apple (‘pomum‘ — apple) and seeded (‘granatus’).
It is thought that pomegranates contain more antioxidants than green tea or red wine.
Mukti organics currently offers two lush products containing certified organic pomegranate oil:
