Delicious colors in a new box of Japanese pastels. When I was a kid I loved getting a brand new, big box of Crayola crayons. The box had two or three levels displaying the crayons. It was inspiring. These pastels are too! , , , , ,

The Paris Galliera is the fashion museum of the city of Paris. Their recent exhibition of sports clothing was part of the city’s celebration of the Olympics. G. Talon Maronnaud’s riding outfit—jacket and jodhpurs—was absolutely chic and could be worn today. Manufactured in 1946, the description said “Jacket maid from weathered wool, jodhpurs from wool broadcloth and chamois leather.” A quick internet search turned up little but a photo of a catalog and the note that the company was a military tailor. A handsome outfit! , , , , , , ,

This evocative Venetian street scene was painted in 1908 by Emily Sargent, the younger sister of John Singer Sargent. Emily, who suffered a serious spinal injury when young, was fragile but traveled extensively through Europe and the Middle East with her older, acclaimed brother. Their much younger sister was the only one of the siblings to have children and one of her descendants, Richard Ormond, the great nephew of John and Emily, has donated a selection of 440 of Emily’s watercolors found in 1998 in a forgotten trunk.
This exquisite painting, seen recently at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, “demonstrates a bold approach to color and a tendency to experimentation, using a range of techniques. Ordinary details…are indicated with subtle, atmospheric brushstrokes.” While John and Emily were encouraged by their mother to sketch, John had formal training in art but Emily did not. She began to paint more regularly after age 30 but had very limited exhibitions. She spent her time traveling with John and acting as his hostess as he entertained clients and fellow artists. Ormond chose The Met, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The National Gallery of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Ashmolean at Oxford, and The Sargent House Museum in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Bravo to Emily! She is getting well deserved recognition at last.

Visiting The Palouse in eastern Washington for a watercolor workshop with —an extraordinary artist and instructor. The Palouse is a spectacular landscape of “amber waves of grain” formed by glacier dust and silt. Floods from the glacial lake Missoula created temporary lakes that dried and their monumental amounts of silt and glacial dust were blown into rippling hills that look@like giant dunes. Planted in wheat and barley, they present a stunning patchwork of subtle color. The sky is big, the days are very bright and hot. The towns, Walla Walla, Waitsburg and others have a feeling that they are both modern and suspended in time. Low rooflines, wide streets, a bit empty. Rught outside of these towns are miles and miles of isolated hills dotted with farms and nanotubes grain elevators. Swipe to see some photos. , , , , ,

Olana, the home of Frederic Church, sits high above the Hudson River. Church was a world famous painter and traveller. Olana was an extraordinary canvas for his talents as a self-taught architect and landscape designer. While the main house is closed at the moment, the 250-acre landscape is open for hiking and walks. Various farm buildings dot the landscape and the colors of painted wood, old bricks in stucco and fieldstone foundations are inspiration for modest watercolors. Paining shows wood siding above bricks and stones. The mauve paint on the wood and the reddish brown bricks above the neutral stonework is a beautiful combination of texture and color. , , , , ,
