Common Afro Hair Myths

Afro hair is very misunderstood.

Myth #1 — Afro hair is very weak or very strong.
Believe it or not, Afro hair is the strongest hair type in terms of tensile strength and the amount of water it can hold. At the same time, afro hair is also the most vulnerable to breakage and damage as every kink and curl is a point where breakage can occur. In order to minimise breakage, it is important to keep your hair moisturised.

Myth #2 — Afro hair is high maintenance and unmanageable.
This is one we hear a lot! Afro hair is not as high maintenance as people tend to think it is. Finding out what makes your hair thrive before you apply any product is essential to seeing the progress of your hair. If you use good quality products in your routine, your afro hair will not only be manageable but it will look great too.

Myth #3 — Trimming your hair makes it grow faster.
Hair is dead so what happens to the ends has little effect on how the hair grows from the scalp. Hair grows on average six inches a year, whether you trim it or not. Trimming the hair does not influence hair growth but is helpful when you’re removing knots and split ends in order to help maintain healthy strands.

Myth #4 — You don't need to wash afro hair.
You definitely need to wash afro hair! Washing with a sulphate free shampoo every 8-15days is best practice. Wash more often if you exercise regularly. Using a shampoo will help remove buildup. Your hair will dry more quickly if you use a microfibre towel, so wash day needn't take all day!

There are many different recipes you can use to make a honey hair mask. This is one of the most basic, and it’s well-suited to dry, damaged hair.

All you need are the following items and ingredients:

1/2 cup of honey
1/4 cup of olive oil
a mixing bowl
a shower cap
a small paint brush (optional)
Try to use raw, organic honey, which is the least processed and has a higher concentration of antioxidants. However, nonorganic honey should still provide benefits.

If you don’t have a shower cap, you can make one using plastic wrap or a large plastic bag and tape.

Instructions

Start with clean, damp hair.
Pour 1/2 cup of honey and 1/4 cup of olive oil into a bowl, and stir the mixture well.
Microwave the mixture for 20 seconds.
Once it’s heated, stir the mixture again with a spoon.
After allowing the mixture to cool (you want it to be slightly warm, not hot), start working it into your hair using your fingers or a small paintbrush. Start at the scalp and work your way down to the ends.
Gently massage your scalp with circular motions using your fingertips.
Place the cap on your hair to help seal in the moisturizing ingredients.
Leave on for 30 minutes.
Rinse the mask from your hair and shampoo as usual to ensure you’ve removed all ingredients.

Due to honey’s therapeutic properties, it’s been used in hair rinses and conditioners for centuries. Today, it’s still a popular natural ingredient in many types of hair care products.

So, what are the benefits of using honey on your hair and including it in a hair mask? According to research and anecdotal evidence, honey may be beneficial in a hair mask for the following reasons:
moisturizes dry hair and scalp
reduces hair breakage
restores shine
improves condition of natural hair
reduces frizz
softens hair

How To Treat Dry Scalp: Best Treatment For Dry Scalp

Looking for the best treatment for dry scalp? A lot of mainstream products contain artificial fragrances which can cause asthma, eczema, muscle pain, bloating, sinus pain, fatigue, eye irritation, gastrointestinal problems, headaches, dizziness and burning or itching skin irritations. So we would recommend using products which are safe, natural and effective, that you use with your simple hair routine.

We recommend washing your hair every 8-15 days using a mild, sulphate-free shampoo. This includes when you have your hair in a protective style. This will ensure that there is no scalp build-up, that you remove enough sebum, and that dirt and dust is gone.
