Some ingredients can't be replaced.
Eternal Spells β saffron, oud, cypriol, magnolia, caramel, leather, sandalwood, vanilla, and ambergris β came from Cierra Candle and Soap Making Supplies, a small supplier that has since closed its doors. The bottle I have is the bottle I have. When it's gone, it's gone.
I knew from other soapmakers that this fragrance would cause a color shift, so I made a decision: no added colorants. Whatever the scraps brought with them, whatever Eternal Spells decided to do on its own β I'd let it happen. I used the ciaglia technique again, this time leaving the scrap pieces a little larger than in Conversation 4, letting them hold their shape and their stories a little longer in the final bar.
The color you see isn't one I chose. It's one the soap chose for itself.
Somewhere in this bar are echoes of every Conversation that came before it. Every fragrance, every color, every batch Mr. Magpie ever muttered his way through. A literal piece of Magpie history β and one that smells like something ancient, warm, and entirely worth finding.
Conversation 6. The one that wrote its own ending.

This one had a plan.
Lychee Blush β apple, pear, lychee, peony, lotus flower, musk, and sugar β is the kind of fragrance that makes you think of summer and optimism and things going exactly as intended. I mixed yellow and pink micas, absolutely certain I was about to make the most perfect peach colored soap anyone had ever seen.
The fragrance oil had thoughts. Whether it was the ratios or a color shift from the oil itself, what came out of that mold was not what was intended. It was something else entirely. Something unplanned. Something that raised an eyebrow and then slowly won me over.
Mr. Magpie talks to the soap a lot. Sometimes the soap talks back.
Conversation 5. The happy accident β and honestly, one of my favorites.

Two full loaves. Two very lucky people who have no idea what's coming.π€π€
A special order just finished curing and is headed out the door β a pair of custom batches gifted from one friend to two others. We don't name names, but we will say this: whoever you are, your friend has excellent taste.
Left loaf β a lard-based bar with silk fibers. Fragrance: sweet wood, warm spices, smoke, tonka, and patchouli. The swirl tells you everything you need to know about the energy of this bar.
Right loaf β a tallow-and-rice-bran bar with activated charcoal and a scent built from cinnamon, whiskey, charred oak barrels, and unburnt to***co. It smells like a very good decision made in a dimly lit room.

Happy Pride, Y'all! π³οΈβπ
This month, Mr. Magpie is showing up for the community with three soaps that celebrate, honor, and remember.
PRIDE PARADE is here for the joy β all color, all noise, all celebration.
ALWAYS REMEMBER honors the le***an activists who showed up when it mattered most.

Dark Dahlia. Musk, lemon, rose, jasmine, clove, cedarwood, sandalwood, and tonka.
The kind of fragrance that enters a room before you do.
For this one I reached for red and purple micas, deepened with just a touch of activated charcoal, and then used the ciaglia technique β blending the soap scraps into the oils and stick blending them down to very fine specks, almost like glitter suspended in the batter. The result is dense, jewel-toned, and dramatic in the best possible way.
Every Conversation bar carries the scraps of the ones before it. But Conversation 4 wears them differently β ground fine, scattered through deep plum and shadow, like petals after a very good party.
Conversation 4. The one that dressed for the occasion.

Conversation 7 has been poured β and she's already humbling me a little. π«
This month's Soap Challenge Club challenge is a river soap: two matching outer sections in contrasting color/texture to a flowing inner section, confetti in at least one layer, and a swirled portion with four or more colors. I thought this would be a slam dunk for me β the Conversation line is *all* confetti soaps, after all. First attempt says: not so fast.
It's still a looker. Deep green-blue confetti outer sections flanking a river of fiery orange, hot pink, bright yellow, and flecks of pale purple β scented with Ciera Candles' Driftwood & Sea Salt (citrus, eucalyptus, orange flower, ozone, balsam fir, patchouli, oakmoss, amber, musk β it smells like standing at the edge of a dark forest that opens onto the ocean).
But I can see exactly where to improve: the river pinches a little at one end on most of the bars, the confetti distribution in the bottom layer is uneven, I was too conservative with the soap scraps, and I want finer confetti overall. The good news? Every one of those is fixable. Attempt two (Conversation 8) is already forming in my head. Stay tuned. π§Όπ₯

This one is a bit heavier, but history is important, especially now.
In the N**i concentration camps of WWII, q***r men and trans women were forced to wear a pink triangle to mark their "crime". In the 70s, activists reclaimed it β wearing it proudly and turning it into a symbol of resistance and remembrance. We are living in a moment when that history needs to be told, retold, and held onto.

Some fragrances smell like a feeling.
White Birch β green, cypress, and cedar β smells like the first cold morning of the year. Clean. Sharp. The kind of quiet that only happens when everything slows down.
It told me it wanted contrast. So I split the batch in two β one half white with titanium dioxide, the other black with activated charcoal β and swirled them together right in the pot. Two halves finding each other, neither one fully surrendering. The scraps of every previous batch were blended in as well, carrying their own histories into the swirl.
What came out looks like birch bark. Like smoke and winter light. Like a conversation that goes quiet right when it gets interesting.
Conversation 3. The one that couldn't make up its mind β and was better for it.
