Let’s talk acne ingredients.
Salicylic acid is a BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) originally derived from willow tree bark. It is a chemical exfoliant that works at clearing away dead skin cells and oil. When excess oil and dead skin cells clog your pores it can cause inflammatory acne. This is where benzoyl peroxide comes in. Benzoyl peroxide delivers oxygen into your pores, creating an oxygen rich environment in which acne-causing bacteria has trouble surviving.
Pairing these two can be very beneficial but beware, layering too many active ingredients can dry out your skin causing more breakouts.
