The way a muscle is built, or its architecture, shapes how it produces force, velocity, and power.
Bellinger et al., 2021. “Lower Limb Muscle Characteristics and F–V Profiles in Sprinting & Jumping.” Med Sci Sports Exerc
Had rugby league players perform squat jumps and 30 m sprints to derive vertical and horizontal force, velocity, power profiles.
Researchers then used MRI, ultrasound, and spectroscopy to analyze muscle volume, fascicle length, pennation angle, and fiber typology. They found that specific muscle volumes and fiber types predicted sprinting and jumping performance, while architecture underpinned how those outputs were expressed.
we need to understand how training drives architectural changes in muscle.
- Pennation angle → determines whether a muscle is more force or velocity biased.
- Fascicle length → supports higher velocity (eccentrics can lengthen fascicles)
- Architectural gear ratio → the mechanism that lets pennated muscles adjust, so they can produce velocity without losing as much force.
