Alright, Burlington. Traffic anywhere near the train tracks will be AWFUL next week (and probably the following week as well). Prepare yourselves and remember to head for the underpasses at South Church St, Fisher St, Broad St, and Mebane St.
Key information:
- West Webb Avenue will be closed for extended periods heading to Elon near Flora Ave. Crews cannot secure that truss bridge overpass like they can at the overpasses in Downtown, so they’ll keep Webb Ave closed when working on that bridge. We do not know when but will post heads up as we get them.
- There may be times when Glen Raven Rd., Lakeview Rd., West Webb Ave near Flora Ave, and York St are closed at the same time. There will be detour signs, but you might need to head down to Fisher St/North Church St or to South Church St via University. Sorry. It’s not our fault, we swear.
- When this is all done, the crossings will be smoothed out and re-paved. They will not be the rough going they have been recently.
You can follow the progress map at the link below. If you’re not familiar with GIS mapping it may take a minute to decipher because it’s very busy. Focus on the little circles - the red ones are closed, the green ones are complete and reopend, and the yellow ones have not yet been worked on.

Heads up, Burlington. The North Carolina Railroad let us know that starting Monday, August 24 and for the several weeks, all of the city’s eight at-grade rail crossings (listed below), will at some point be closed 24/7 for multiple days for infrastructure improvements. During some days multiple crossings will be closed at the same time. We do not know exactly when because the work is weather dependent.

Detour signs will be posted, but your best bet will be to aim for the streets with underpasses. Those are Mebane St., Broad St., South Church St., Fisher St.

The West Webb underpass in Glen Raven will need to be closed during rail work for safety reasons.

The North Carolina Railroad and Norfolk Southern is replacing aging rail with continuous welded rail (long sections of steel track welded together to eliminate traditional track joints). The goal is to reduce maintenance costs and improve corridor safety.

Gilmer St.
Main St.
Elmira St.
Glen Raven Rd.
Lakeview Drive
Gilliam Rd.
