Letâs be honest about your sleep trackerâŚ
Itâs pretty good at one thing: telling whether you were asleep or awake. That âdeep sleepâ and âREMâ breakdown you check every morning? Not nearly as reliable. When researchers put 7 popular devices head to head with a real sleep lab study, staging was inconsistent, and accuracy got worse on exactly the nights you slept badly (Chinoy et al., Sleep, 2021).
But hereâs the bigger problem. Your watch can tell you that you slept poorly. It has no idea why.
And the why is the whole point.
If youâre in your 40s and waking up hot at 3 a.m., thatâs not random. In the SWAN study, which followed over 3,000 women through the menopause transition, more frequent hot flashes and night sweats meant more trouble falling asleep and staying asleep (Kravitz et al., Sleep, 2008).
Snoring or waking up exhausted no matter how long you slept? That can be sleep apnea, and no watch diagnoses that. Thyroid, iron and plain old stress can all do it tooâŚ
So keep the data. Itâs a clue. But the answer comes from your symptoms, your history and, when it makes sense, labs looked at in context. Not a score on your wrist.

Perimenopause is weird. Letâs talk about something nobody warns you about: SWEAT. đ
You may suddenly notice:
⢠You sweat more easily than you used to
⢠Your night sweats have a whole new level of commitment
⢠Your deodorant suddenly seems useless
⢠And maybe the strangest one⌠your body odor smells different
Thereâs actually a reason for it.
During perimenopause, estrogen and progesterone can fluctuate pretty dramatically. Those hormonal changes affect your hypothalamus, which helps regulate body temperature. Your âthermostatâ becomes more sensitive, so your body may trigger sweating with much smaller changes in temperature.
But increased sweating is only part of the story.
Sweat itself is mostly odorless. The smell develops when sweat, particularly from apocrine glands in areas like the armpits and groin, interacts with bacteria on the skin.
Hormonal shifts can change how much you sweat, the composition of skin oils and secretions, and potentially the skin microbiome. Put those together and suddenly you may notice a body odor that is stronger or just⌠different.
Stress can pile onto this too. Perimenopause can come with sleep disruption, anxiety, and changes in cortisol and sympathetic activity, all of which can increase sweating.
So if youâre 40-ish and thinking:
âWhy am I sweating while doing absolutely nothing?â
âWhy do I smell different?â
âWhy does the deodorant Iâve used for 15 years suddenly not work?â
It may very well be part of the hormonal transition.
That doesnât mean every new odor or excessive sweating should automatically be blamed on hormones. Thyroid dysfunction, medications, infections, blood sugar issues, and other medical conditions can also cause changes in sweating or body odor.
Perimenopause has a LOT more symptoms than hot flashes and irregular periods.
Sometimes your armpits apparently get the memo before you do. đ

Chia seeds are one of those little foods that pack a surprising nutritional punch.
Today I mixed them with smashed raspberries and Icelandic skyr yogurt. Simple, high protein, high fiber, and actually really good.
Why I like chia seeds:
⢠Fiber: about 10 grams in just 2 tablespoons, which can help with bowel regularity, satiety, and feeding beneficial gut bacteria.
⢠Omega-3s: one of the better plant sources of ALA omega-3 fatty acids.
⢠Blood sugar: that combination of soluble fiber + fat + protein can slow digestion and help blunt the glucose response to a meal.
⢠Heart health: their fiber, ALA, and mineral content make them a nice addition to an overall heart-healthy diet.
⢠Minerals: chia provides magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, and manganese.
⢠Easy nutrition: no supplement, powder, or complicated recipe required.
And then I added raspberries for even more fiber and polyphenols, plus skyr for a big protein boost.
One thing I really try to teach my patients: nutrition doesnât have to be complicated. Start with real food and look for simple ways to add protein, fiber, healthy fats, and colorful plants.
Some secrets are meant to be shared. đđ
Happy Friday!
What I wish more women knew about perimenopause:
Perimenopause can begin years before your final period, and you can still have regular cycles while itâs happening.
During this transition, ovarian function becomes less predictable. Estrogen can fluctuate significantly, while progesterone often becomes less consistent as ovulation becomes more irregular.
That can show up as:
⢠Cycle changes
⢠Sleep disruption
⢠Mood changes or new anxiety
⢠Brain fog
⢠Changes in libido
⢠Hot flashes or night sweats
⢠Headaches or migraines
⢠Vaginal or urinary symptoms
⢠Changes in body composition and muscle mass
And one important point: a single hormone panel may not capture whatâs happening because hormone levels can vary considerably from one cycle, and even one day, to another.
Perimenopause is a normal physiologic transition, but symptoms that interfere with your quality of life deserve to be taken seriously.
Understanding whatâs changing is the first step.
Testosterone isnât just a âmale hormone,â and it isnât just about libido!
Women make testosterone too, and levels generally decline with age. While sexual desire is probably the symptom most commonly associated with testosterone, women may also notice changes in:
⢠Muscle mass and strength
⢠Exercise performance and recovery
⢠Libido and sexual response
⢠Energy and motivation
⢠Mood and sense of well-being
⢠Focus and mental drive
⢠Bone health
One thing I pay particular attention to is MUSCLE.
As we move through our 30s, 40s and beyond, maintaining lean muscle becomes increasingly important. Muscle supports metabolic health, insulin sensitivity, strength, bone health and our ability to stay independent as we age.
But testosterone isnât something I treat based on a single lab value or because someone feels tired.
Fatigue, brain fog, low libido and loss of muscle can have MANY causes, including thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency, inadequate protein or calories, poor sleep, insulin resistance, chronic stress, medications and changes in estrogen.
Thatâs why I look at the whole picture: symptoms, health history, medications, lifestyle and appropriate labsâŚ.etc
The goal is thoughtful treatment, appropriate monitoring and avoiding excessive androgen exposure.
Women need testosterone too.
Itâs just one piece of the hormonal and metabolic puzzle.

Lunch todayâŚand a little magnesium talkâŚ
Organic greens, blueberries, red onion, salty cheese, toasted salted pecans, chicken, and a little good-quality extra virgin olive oil.
Magnesium is involved in hundreds of processes in the body, including energy production, muscle and nerve function, glucose metabolism, blood pressure regulation, and bone health.
And while magnesium supplements certainly have their place, Iâm always a FOOD FIRST person when we can be.
Some of our best food sources of magnesium:
⢠Pumpkin seeds
⢠Almonds and cashews
⢠Pecans
⢠Beans and lentils
⢠Dark leafy greens
⢠Avocado
⢠Whole grains
⢠Dark chocolate
So why do we hear so much about magnesium deficiency?
Part of it is simply that many people donât eat enough magnesium-rich whole foods. Modern food processing removes a lot of magnesium, and diets heavy in refined grains and ultra-processed foods tend to provide less.
Thereâs also concern about declining mineral density in some soils and crops. Soil type, agricultural practices, fertilizer use, crop variety, and growing conditions can all affect mineral content. That doesnât mean our food has âno magnesium,â but itâs another reason I like variety and minimally processed foods rather than relying on one source.
One other lunch tip: watch the dressing.
A beautiful, nutrient-dense salad can turn into a very calorie-dense meal pretty quickly when we pour on several tablespoons of dressing. Many bottled dressings also use highly refined oils and added sugar.
I usually keep it simple. A small amount of high-quality extra virgin olive oil, some acid if you want it, salt and pepper. You still get the flavor and the benefits of olive oil without drowning your salad in it.
Supplements can fill gaps when needed, but they shouldnât replace good food.
Food first⌠then! Supplement intentionally. đą

Because I wonât let it go⌠đ
Because muscle AND bone need load.
A 2025 review on load-induced muscle hypertrophy describes mechanical tension as a primary stimulus for muscle growth. Muscle actually senses that tension and converts it into cellular signals that increase muscle protein synthesis and drive adaptation.
Our bones are doing the same thing. Research on bone mechanotransduction shows that osteocytes sense mechanical strain and use that information to regulate bone remodeling. When bone is repeatedly challenged, it adapts to better tolerate that load. When it isnât loaded, we see the opposite. Bone loss with prolonged immobilization and even spaceflight are pretty dramatic examples of that.
This is also why nutrition alone isnât enough.đ
Protein gives us the amino acids to build muscle. Calcium, vitamin D and other nutrients support bone formation. But your body still needs a reason to invest those resources into maintaining that tissue.
Walking is good for you. Cardio is good for you. Neither REPLACES progressive resistance training.
We were built to move weight.
Pick up something heavy. đ
