Another business closing in Calais, Milltown Coffee.

Whenever a local business announces that it is closing , the community quickly appear: This is so sad . We hate to see another business close. Our community needs to support small businesses.

Those feelings may be sincere. But there is another question we don’t ask nearly enough:

Did we actually patronize that business while the doors were open?

It is easy to express sadness after the business is closing . It is much harder to look back and ask how often did we walk through their doors, purchased their products, booked their services, ate at their restaurant bought a gift certificate, referred a customer, or otherwise contributed to keeping their business alive.

And perhaps one of the most important things for a local business owner to see people traveling 50, 75, or even 100 miles away to purchase the same service at a much higher cost which is available right in there own community.

Everyone has the right to choose where they spend there money ,and and there may be times where someone prefers a particular provider or business elsewhere. But if we continually take our dollars outside our community when comparable products and services are available locally, we shouldn’t be surprised when eventually there are fewer less local businesses.

Small businesses are also some of the first people asked to support their communities. They donate gift certificates. They sponsor events. They contribute to fund raisers.

But how often do we stop and ask whether we are supporting them in return.

No individual customer or business is responsible for keeping another business operating.

Before we morn another business that closes maybe we should ask ourselves

Did I support them when I had the opportunity
