This morning I had a client storm out of my chair, it was shocking and disappointed me. Not because she left the salon exactly, but because I couldn’t communicate with her in the way she needed or help her meet her hair goals.
When you have black hair you have to realize there is a process and journey to get to white/platinum/silver/etc.
When your stylist tells you that you can not achieve your goal in one sitting it isn’t because we don’t want to help you get there, it’s because your hair has tons of pigment that we have to go through and pull out and we always want to maintain the integrity of your hair while doing that. There is always the occasional surprise where someone’s hair lifts exactly how you want, the stars align, you look like a rock star and you get your client exactly where they want in one go. But this is not the normal. On a regular basis going black to blonde you will fight through different levels of warmth before you get to that perfect platinum blonde. And in some cases (like my own hair) you won’t be able to get there at all before your hair is too damaged. As the professional our goal is always to get you to your end goal, we always want to make you happy, we want you to return to our chair, recommend us to your friends, we are overly invested in you, your life, basically we are major people pleasers.
Today sucked, I was unable to make someone happy or understand and that hurts. I pride myself on going above and beyond with my clients. And I wish I was able to make this particular client understand the process of black to blonde. If you take anything from this let it be that your hairstylist isn’t perfect, we can only do what your hair will allow of us, we want to help you reach your goals but we always will protect the integrity of your hair. 🫶🏼
