Hi! I’m Erica. 🤍

I may not be new to massage, but I am new to Best Self. So I would like to introduce myself—not just as a massage therapist, but as the person behind the hands.

I’ve been a massage therapist for 15 years, and I truly love what I do. But my story with massage started long before I ever imagined it would become my career.

When I was 17, I was rear-ended by a drunk driver going around 65 mph while we were sitting still waiting to turn. I had whiplash and was sore, but I was told I’d be fine.

I wasn’t.

Over the next several years, I dealt with debilitating headaches, migraines, and constant neck and shoulder pain. I was prescribed so many medications and muscle relaxers that I often felt like a zombie on top of feeling miserable.

Then a nurse practitioner who is now a dear friend changed everything for me. She told me she wanted me to start getting regular massage and chiropractic care.

This was about 25 years ago, when massage wasn’t something most doctors recommended. It was often viewed as a luxury or something you did just to be pampered.

But I was desperate for relief, so I listened…
I found an incredible massage therapist, started getting regular adjustments and amazingly, that’s what finally helped.

I learned that I had lost the natural curve in my cervical spine from the accident, along with extremely tight muscles that had been trying to compensate for years.

To this day, I still have to take care of my body.

Massage and chiropractic care are part of my maintenance. When I stay on top of it, my migraines stay away for the most part and my body functions so much better.

I think of it like changing the oil in your car.

You can’t do it once and expect everything to run perfectly forever…Our bodies need maintenance, too.

That experience—although miserable—ultimately shaped my entire career. I wanted to help people the way I had been helped, and I wanted to change the way people thought about what massage could actually do.

And 15 years of experience has taught me a lot.

When I first started, I thought hard, deep pressure was always the answer. Over the years, I’ve learned something very different:

For a muscle to truly soften, your body has to feel safe enough to let it go.

If your body is tensing while I’m trying to work on it, I’m not getting very far. Sometimes the best way to reach those deeper layers isn’t to force our way into them, but to give your nervous system a chance to settle first.

Once your body realizes it’s safe, I can work deeper—and often you don’t even realize how much deeper I’m getting until you stand up and suddenly notice that you can turn your neck, get dressed, or stand up without bracing yourself.

There are a lot of layers to massage, and every body is different. But one thing I can promise is that I will always listen to what your body needs and work with it—not against it.

Because I’ve been the person who was constantly hurting and couldn’t find relief.

I still have my own things I have to manage.

I’ve experienced many different types of bodywork over the years, and I’ve taken the things that helped me and woven them into the way I work with others.

I know what it feels like to be miserable in your own body.

And I also know that you don’t have to stay there.

That’s why I do what I do. 🤍
