Atlanta, 1998. In a small apartment bathroom, a 27 year old office supply salesperson cut the feet off a pair of control top pantyhose before leaving for a party. The modification solved one problem but created another. The fabric rolled up her legs within minutes. The inconvenience stayed with her long after the evening ended. Her name was Sara Blakely.

At the time, Blakely was selling fax machines door to door in Florida. She had no formal background in fashion, manufacturing, or retail. What she had was a specific frustration with existing hosiery products and five thousand dollars in savings. She believed there was a market for footless shaping undergarments that provided smoothing without visible seams.

She began researching patents and product design on her own. Lacking funds for legal assistance, she wrote her initial patent application herself and filed it with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She then contacted hosiery manufacturers, most of whom declined to produce a new design. Industry leaders were accustomed to established patterns and were skeptical of altering traditional products.

Eventually, a mill owner in North Carolina agreed to consider the concept after feedback from his daughters, who tested a prototype and responded positively. Production began in limited quantities. Blakely handled branding, packaging, and distribution personally. She chose the name Spanx and secured placement in department stores by pitching directly to buyers.

In 2000, Spanx officially launched. Early momentum grew when Oprah Winfrey featured the product on her annual “Favorite Things” list. Media attention increased, and sales expanded rapidly. Blakely retained full ownership of the company in its early years, an uncommon move among start ups seeking outside investment.

Spanx expanded beyond hosiery into a broader shapewear line. The company emphasized comfort and discreet construction, positioning itself between traditional undergarments and fashion. By 2012, Blakely became one of the youngest self made female billionaires according to Forbes. Blakely’s path reflected broader shifts in consumer driven innovation. Rather than emerging from established apparel houses, the product originated from a user’s direct experience. Her persistence in navigating patent law, manufacturing, and retail channels illustrated how entrepreneurial success can begin with identifying a gap overlooked by existing decision makers.

The industry that initially dismissed the concept eventually incorporated similar designs across major brands. Footless shapewear became standard in many wardrobes.
