It's called carmine, and it comes from tiny cochineal insects that live on prickly pear cacti. It takes around 70,000 of them to make just one pound of dye! 🌵🐞

People have been after that red for a long time. For about 300 years, cochineal was one of the most valuable exports out of the Americas. Today you'll still find carmine in lipsticks, blushes, eyeshadows, and even some nail polishes.
