One point I’m constantly reiterating in my hair classes is that as business owners, we have the power to help shape our communities. We can choose to solely chase profit, or we can band together to support our neighbors.

This week, Foundations Hair & Makeup, The Right Spot Salon, and Sublime Beauty Studio teamed up to bring free salon and barber services to Life Moves shelter in San Jose. Residents were treated to makeovers and styling lessons to give them a leg up as they re-enter the workforce. (Sherry from The Right Spot also recently returned from a trip to Lahaina, where she donated her skills to those affected by the wildfires.)

Hairstylists, chefs, mechanics, engineers, farmers, artists…we all have talents to share. The next time you’re feeling down about the state of the world, take a step back and consider how your skills can brighten up your own community.

Paws for a cause Los Altos resident Darcy Fowkes, D’Arcy Couture’s owner/clothes designer, organized a fashion shoot last month featuring the Rotary Club of Los Altos’ fiberglass bears on display throughout downtown Los Altos.

Salon owner, Heather Werner, is currently climbing Mount Everest, with the hope of being the first American hairstylist to stand on the summit. Her journey is sponsored by organic hair care and color line, All-Nutrient, and fashion photographer, Ven Ready.
