On July 26, 1959, Lieutenant Colonel William H. Rankin, commanding officer of Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-122, ejected from his Vought F8U-1 Crusader at an altitude of 47,000 feet over North Carolina after the jet's engine failed. The emergency was compounded by the failure of the aircraft’s ram air turbine, which left Rankin with no control and forced him to eject directly into a severe thunderstorm. His parachute descent, which should have lasted approximately 11 minutes, extended to an astonishing 40 minutes due to violent weather conditions, making it the longest duration parachute descent in history.
Prior to the incident, LtCol Rankin had been conducting a routine high-altitude flight when his aircraft suffered a sudden engine seizure. The Vought F8U-1, a supersonic jet fighter known for its speed and high-performance envelope, was particularly vulnerable to catastrophic failure at high altitudes. When the aircraft’s emergency systems failed to engage properly, Rankin had no choice but to eject, a highly dangerous maneuver at such a height and speed. Unbeknownst to him, he was parachuting directly into the heart of a towering cumulonimbus storm system.
As Rankin descended, he endured extreme turbulence, hail, lightning, and updrafts that repeatedly arrested his fall and threw him violently about, prolonging his exposure to the storm. His survival, despite barotrauma, severe bruising, and shock, was hailed as a remarkable feat of endurance and luck. The incident drew significant attention from both military and scientific communities, contributing to improved understanding of parachute dynamics in storm conditions and influencing future ejection system designs. LtCol Rankin’s harrowing experience remains a singular episode in aviation history.
