Knowing your hair’s porosity turns hair care from trial-and-error into strategy. It saves time, money, and frustration—and helps you finally understand what your hair has been trying to tell you 🥰

Hair porosity is a measure of how well your hair can absorb and retain moisture. It’s determined by the structure of the hair cuticle—the outermost layer of each strand—which is made of overlapping scales, similar to shingles on a roof. How tightly or loosely these scales lie affects how water, oils, and products move in and out of the hair.

If the cuticle layers are tightly packed, moisture has a harder time entering the hair, but once it does, it stays in longer. If the cuticles are more raised or damaged, moisture enters easily but also escapes quickly. This is why some people feel like their hair never seems to get wet, while others feel like their hair soaks up water instantly but dries out just as fast.

Hair porosity can be influenced by genetics, but also by things like heat styling, chemical treatments, sun exposure, and harsh products. Understanding your hair’s porosity helps you choose the right products and routines, so your hair stays hydrated, strong, and healthy.

In hair care, hydration and moisture are related but not the same thing.

Hydration refers to water. When hair is hydrated, it has enough water inside the hair shaft. This gives hair flexibility, softness, and bounce. Water is what actually makes hair feel supple and alive. Without enough hydration, hair becomes stiff, dull, and more likely to break.

Moisture refers to oils, butters, creams, and other ingredients that seal and protect that water inside the hair. Moisture doesn’t replace water—it helps keep the water from escaping. Think of hydration as filling a cup with water, and moisture as putting a lid on the cup so the water doesn’t evaporate.

Healthy hair needs both. You hydrate first by using water-based products, steam, or washing and conditioning with water. Then you add moisture by sealing that hydration in with oils, creams, or butters. If you only use oils without water, hair can still be dry because there’s no hydration to lock in. If you only use water without sealing, hair can dry out quickly. The balance of hydration and moisture is what keeps hair soft, strong, and manageable.
