But tucked inside all that folklore was some very real chemistry: lemon peel contains limonene, a naturally occurring compound especially useful for cutting through oily soils.

Maybe that’s why lemons never really left the cleaning cupboard. We still formulate with citrus today—just with a little more science behind it.

Before pods, liquid detergent, and an entire aisle of laundry products… there was washing soda.

For generations, sodium carbonate—better known as washing soda—earned a permanent place in the laundry room. Its alkalinity helps tackle greasy, stubborn soils and creates better conditions for cleaning. Simple chemistry, long before anyone called it formulation science.

And here’s the part I love: we still use it.

When we formulated Alpiniå Laundry Detergent, we kept some of those old wash-day staples—including washing soda, borax, baking soda, and saponified coconut oil—but paired them with the things Grandma didn’t have: modern surfactants, activated oxygen, hard-water support, and six targeted enzymes designed to tackle different types of everyday stains.

Turns out, Grandma’s laundry shelf was onto something. We just gave it a modern update.
