No one tells you how to process the grief that comes with being a hairstylist.

When I first got out of hair school, I never once thought about losing a client to sickness. I thought I was just building a career. What I didn’t realize was that I was also building lifelong relationships.

When you spend a few hours with someone every couple weeks for years, they’re no longer just a client. You celebrate milestones together. You hear about their families, their victories, their heartbreaks, and their dreams. Somehow, without even realizing it, you help each other navigate life.

Then one day, they don’t come back.

No one prepares you for the heartbreak of opening your color cabinet and seeing their formula still sitting there exactly where it’s always been. A color you mixed for years, now untouched. It’s a quiet reminder of the conversations you’ll never have again, the hugs you’ll never get, and the chair that somehow feels a little emptier.

People often think being a hairstylist is just a fun, cute job. And yes, we get to create beautiful hair. But what they don’t always see are the relationships behind the chair.

We’re there for first dates, weddings, new babies, promotions, celebrations, cancer diagnoses, losses, and goodbyes. We become confidants, therapists, cheerleaders, and friends.

We’re not just hairstylists.

We’re honored to be a small part of so many people’s stories and when they’re gone, they leave a space in our hearts that never really gets filled.
