HEY HEY HEY! Its our long overdue edition of "Meet the Farmer's Favorite Tools" day! Which tool do you think we used to loosen 100 feet of three rows of carrots in 10 minutes, not counting setup????
And YES! THE FARMERS MARKET OF CARBONDALE is open for at least FOUR more Saturdays! Including tomorrow!

Welcome to SPRING and our first 2025 Tour ‘de Farm! We are thrilled to once again have the privilege to grow for The Farmer's Market of Carbondale and Neighborhood Co-op Grocery. This year, we will strive to update the path our crops take before they reach your shopping bag.

The photos and captions herein are meant to give a glimpse of Mother Nature’s potent power to transform Winter’s dormancy to Spring’s vibrancy.

HAPPY 2025 to you and yours! We trust you had some time to R E L A X with your beloveds and catch up on your reading, sleep and maybe tidy your seed collection?

What an amazing last market- a new grandson was born! So of course we enacted our three top reasons to be farmers (December, January and February travel) —-we took the crack of dawn shift to snuggle this little guy while his parents slept… playing with push toys and walks with his big sis and a family hike up Pinnacle Peak to meet Santa were highlights!
Our next flight a 4-year-old on her birthday and played countless fort games w/ her brother and their Auntie V.
We trust that like us, you got to spend time with your beloveds. We are all connected, and indeed the events of this past week have strengthened our resolve to treasure the moments:

First, the ice n snow:
A week ago we were salting sidewalks, stairs and drives. We are thrilled to have capped this past week with today’s melting beauty of ice encapsulated branches (Sunday’s storm) covered with (yesterday’s) five incher snowfall! When we add the trifecta of a 30 hour power outage, we have to say this is the first time In our 48 years in so IL that we had such an event. Typically it has been one or the other, but not both. We are grateful we have a wood stove that can boil a pot of water and have two Dutch ovens heating as well! Not everyone had those comforts and some homes went 2 to 4 days 😳 without heat.

And the farewell:
Jason Carter was spot on when he tagged his grandfather as a “climate warrior”. (If you have not heard it, google it. This grandson has charisma and a work ethic)

Back when President Carter put solar panels on the West Wing of the White House, we were smitten. I dried countless batches of strawberry jam first in our truck cab and then in our sunspace! Bruce started plants in makeshift cold frames, following Mother Earth News how-to’s. It took us 40 years to tuck away enough $ to install our own two solar panels and there is no turning back! But meantime, Mr. Golden Sun provides @60% of our home and farm energy costs. And we get $880 Solar Renewable Energy Credit every three months! If Only battery back up systems were not priced out the wazoo…

And the Cali wildfires:
It was with bated breath that we waited for the news of our friends’ home. So far, it has been identified as standing, untouched, but their entire town is decimated. We are grateful they called the fire dept as soon as they smelled smoke, left within minutes and had camera footage showing their house was treated by the fire dept. Hopeful they figure out who/how this fire started.

THANK YOU for BEING GRACIOUS at the Carbondale Farmers Market or as a Neighborhood Coop member or customer. Do support the Foodworks Farmers Market every Saturday. It’s from 9 to noon inside. Use the mall’s east side movie theater entrance hallway.
LAST- A CORRECTION: on the video I made a mistake. . Sorry! It’s LETTUCE that’s peeking out, not carrots. It will be FRIDAY at best when those are planted.

Please, take good care, TREASURE the moments and hug your beloveds- often! ♥️Maryanne, Bruce & Ben

Another lovely day in the soil. Bruce scooped buckets full of Green Ridge Landscaping composted soil just delivered for what we expected would be many times by its new owner, Bryan, just over two weeks ago. It is surreal to see this soil as both the first and the final salute to him and the joy he exuded in our two meetups. Indeed, we are resolved to also emanate his joie de vivre as we grow Food and flowers, friends and family in this circle we call life.

In fact, that resolve to find calm and balance gave us a stellar start to the season as Danielle and Sarah shoveled and wheeled countless barrows to cover the paper they had laid. They then cut openings that they popped plants into, each seeded by Danielle and nurtured inside the house sunspace thru some tough cold snaps by bruce. Ben helped Complete the planting and watering at days end of this first crop of lettuce. Bruce reeled in the hose and packed up supplies, just in case the Weather Gods indeed send a tad of rain our way tonight—- not even an inch recorded in all of February! We are glad to welcome the plants to root, in what we are calling Bryan’s Soil, despite the foreboding “March into A Scorched Spring” soundtrack of the weather forecasts.
