Humectants, Emollients, and Occlusives...Oh My!!!
The term “moisturizer” was originally coined to talk about any cream or product that was created to increase the skin’s moisture. It was believed that this was done, primarily, by preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) through something called occlusion. In simpler terms, this means that moisturizers were meant to prevent the loss of water from the skin by creating a layer on the skin that trapped that water inside (aka an occlusive layer).
But here’s the thing: not all moisturizers are occlusives, and effective occlusive action is not the only thing that actually contributes to healthy skin. Lipids - particularly ceramides - also play a really important role in skin hydration, and true hydration involves a combination of:
+ Repairing and strengthening the skin’s natural barrier
+ Increasing water content in the skin
+ Reducing transepidermal water loss
+ Restoring the lipid barrier
You need a combination of all three components of humectants, emollients, and occlusives, and to complete all these functions. To get the amazing benefits from each ingredient profile you need to apply them in the correct order, which is: Humectants, Emollients, and Occlusives.

Did you know the prevalence of SIBO in rosacea patients can be 60% or higher?
SIBO is a condition in which the normal flora of the large intestine has migrated to the small intestine. The small intestine is the site of digestion and absorption, as well as mucosal immunity. Any bacterial overgrowth in this location can greatly impact nutritional absorption as well as systemic inflammation, often the result of the decreased protective function of gastric acid secretion and intestinal motility.
In a normal small intestine, the number of bacteria is typically less than 103 colony-forming units (CFUs) per milliliter, whereas in SIBO, it is more than 105 colony CFUs per milliliter. There are many causes of SIBO such as low stomach acid, pancreatic insufficiency, structural problems like small intestinal obstruction, digestive issues seen in scleroderma, or a combination of several different ones.
The most common bacteria include Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus, and Bacteroides. Endotoxins from these bacteria can result in damage to the intestine, causing a release of inflammatory markers like tumor necrosis factor-alpha. Clinically, SIBO presents as abdominal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, or watery diarrhea. Chronic damage can result in vitamin deficiencies such as B1, B3, and B12; however, there is an excess of folate and vitamin K as bacteria produce these compounds.
The continued evidence creating a connection between two seemingly unrelated conditions is starting to change the way doctors and researchers approach gut and skin conditions like SIBO and rosacea. We are looking to the gut as a potential treatment option for not only skin conditions like rosacea and acne but also depression, anxiety, and even Parkinson’s disease.

Day 26 | Do you know if your skin barrier is damaged?
If your skin barrier is damaged, your skin might be dry, flakey, sensitive, irritated, tingly, burning, and/or itchy. You may also be dealing with rashes and inflammation, since a damaged skin barrier increases your risk of infections and dermatitis as well as flare-ups of rosacea, eczema, acne, and keratosis pilaris.
Another tell-tale sign? Is when you use a skincare product on your skin that you typically tolerate, but it starts to irritate or burn on application. A damaged skin barrier can usually heal itself within a couple of weeks, depending on the damage, but only if you stop all exfoliators (even acids and retinoids) and switch to gentle, soothing products instead.
We can strengthen our skin barrier in 4 specific ways:
1. Topical supplementation of ingredients that mimic our skin’s natural skin barrier components. The Skin Barrier is made up of 3 main elements: Ceramides, Cholesterol, Essential fatty acids
2. Stimulate the production of skin barrier components.
3. Increase hydration (dehydrated skin is both a cause and symptom of impaired skin barrier).
4. Soothing ingredients (inflammation is damaging to the skin barrier).
It’s highly unlikely that you would permanently damage your skin barrier through normal activities and skincare routines alone. However, it is possible for your skin barrier to be predisposed to breaking down based on genetics, age, prolonged stress, and environmental factors. This is why it’s so important to have moisturizing products in your skincare routine to keep your skin barrier healthy and more resistant to damage.
How long it takes to improve your skin barrier is dependent on your skin type and how damaged your skin barrier is. If you just went overboard with a face peel or a scrub one time? You should be on the mend within two weeks after sticking to a bland routine. But if you've spent months accidentally breaking down your skin barrier through harsh products, stress, or environmental factors, you might need to change your routine for one to two months to get your skin back to normal.

Day 20 | Acne is a sign that there is an imbalance in your body.
Empower yourself to heal your body from the inside out. Learn which foods nourish you and which foods rob you of your health and vitality. Help your body detoxify and heal your gut.
Research is now completely on board - insulin dysregulation, microbiome imbalance, poor detoxification, stress, lack of nutrition and hormonal imbalance are all root causes of acne. And the only way to truly heal acne is to focus on balancing the root causes of acne - which means improving your overall health.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stop wasting your life reacting to your acne, constantly trying new skincare, medications, treatments, and supplements. That's expensive and exhausting. Trying to treat acne solely with topicals is a losing battle. What works for your best friend, may not work for you.
Skin is an organ, and most acne starts internally, with inflammation. Putting zit cream on top without addressing what is going on underneath through diet and lifestyle factors is like playing whack-a-mole with your face. Those buggers are going to just keep popping back up. If you want to wake up every morning acne-free, you must address the underlying root causes.

Day 19 | Omega-3s are called essential because they are required for several biological processes within the body. We can’t make these fats and we have to ingest them in order to survive. They are a part of the cell membrane of every single cell in your body.
Omega-3 essential fatty acids help to maintain cell membrane elasticity and structural integrity. Our skin’s structural integrity is dependent on the structural integrity of its cells. Therefore, it is important to consume high-quality omega-3 fatty acids regularly. Examples include walnuts, h**p seeds, chia seeds, and wild-caught seafood such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, and anchovies.
The best Omega 3 supplements for hormonal acne are ones that contain the highest levels of EPA and DHA because it’s these two essential fatty acids have been shown to help regulate hormones and calm inflammation.
Taking Omega 3s for your skin can benefit acne in three ways. First, it can regulate hormones such as testosterone that trigger the overproduction of sebum. Secondly, its essential fatty acid EPA is converted in the body to powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial substances, soothing the inflammatory response. And thirdly, it can stop the liver from producing a hormone called ‘insulin-like growth factor 1’ (IGF-1), which can, in turn, soothe spots.
