THORACOLUMBAR FASCIA LINKS- fascia is more than a packing tissue or even a force transmitter but rather a major sensory organ. An excellent example is the fascia that connects our upper and lower bodies, the THORACOLUMBAR Fascia. This tissue has been shown to be richly innervated with both sensory nerve endings and mechanoreceptors (see papers by Yahia or C. Fede). This tells us the fascia has a major role in informing our brain about the movements and safety of our spines. When exposed to excessive forces the brain will sense the tension or pain from the fascia and coordinate either muscle contraction to create movement like in the glute max or reflex muscle guarding to limit painful or unstable movement.
