Clients/friends, potential clients, and to whomever it may concern:
Everyone I know in this business has been negatively impacted by sky rocketing supply costs these last few years. My clients/friends know, I'm direct, upfront and honest. So here we go again... Another half bitching/half explaining post for you if you're completely unaware how this industry works:
It has always come down to the best value and effectiveness of the products I use. Last year, I completely changed color lines to a mishmash of the most effective for the results my clients ask for/expect and I've never been happier with my work and the results as consistently as I am now. In recent months, I've had numerous supply issues out of my control and now have to look for out of state vendors and suppliers for half of my supplies. This has a cost. My last actual raise that wasn't supply cost driven was 16 years ago. When I received my master colorist title. Years later, I have that same certification in 3 additional color lines that I've explored for cost effectiveness.
16 years ago my base price for a cut/color was $120.
My base now is $130.
16 years I've been coming up with ways to keep my prices down. Now add years of experience, expensive ass classes, teaching my own classes, more certifications... in any other field, I would have had multiple raises by now. 😂 But we all know that's not how the service industry works. And I chose this damn life. I love it and hate it, but it is what it is.
Pricing can only be based off of local economic factors in order to stay competitive. So I've held my prices as long as possible, despite supply costs doubling since, giving myself a pay cut while working more hours and taking more clients to make up the difference in take home. I'm sure you've all had pay increases in the last few years. Not me. Probably not any stylist you know. It's a hard gig. That's why not many make it after the first 5 years.
But you guys, I'm old.
I'm tired.
I'm too damn accredited and experienced for this s**t. 😬
I can't work more hours or magically make these services faster than I already have in order to fit more people in my schedu

I swear there's no other profession that you're expected to work with literal razor blades and chemicals that can burn you and your child, while there's hot tools hanging around at 400°, and your 'angel' is lobbing projectiles at everyone in the vicinity, screaming, getting into products, supplies, and messing with our equipment worth thousands like it's their personal jungle gym, dirtying our sanitized equipment, all while we're expected to smile, focus and do our very best work for the exact same price as our clients that show up early, with coffee, ask if we need a break or to eat first and treat us as the humans and professionals we are. 🙄
