We say “never forget,” but I’m afraid we have completely forgotten what a tragic and horrifying day this was. From the ashes came love, sacrifice, understanding, and a strength that was so uniquely American. We came together as a country that day—and for the many months and years that followed. It was painful, devastating, and simultaneously beautiful in its unfolding.

Even as a sixth grader sitting in Mr. Myers’s science class-I remember feeling the heaviness of that day. I may not have understood everything that was happening, but I understood that something had changed. I understood we were grieving as a country. And i felt the rippling heaviness that September 11, 2001 would have on us as Americans.

Here we are 25 years later, with more strife, more anger, and more dismissive and resentful attitudes toward one another than I have ever experienced in my lifetime. The general lack of empathy in our nation and the divisiveness that I feel is so intentionally perpetuated is heartbreaking. We have become so quick to assume the worst about one another, so eager to argue our differences, and so slow to remember that beneath all of it, we are still people.

Sure wish it didn’t take a national tragedy like the one we experienced 25 years ago to put aside our differences and find a way to band together for the greater good of everyone. But alas, I fear there is no mending the great divide until all of us, as one people, suffer together like we did on September 11, 2001.

I hope today, in light of it being the 25th anniversary of this tragedy- that you choose kindness and understanding towards someone who is different than you. Choose love. Choose grace. Try to give people more understanding than what you think they deserve because we truly never know the weight that someone else is silently carrying.

Even though i feel like we forget daily, I hope we remember today and do a little better because of it 🤍🇺🇸💙
